Anyone Else Act?

I don't like being an adult. I don't like working in a field I don't care about. I don't like being so far away from my family. I don't like any of this nonsense.

But I can't act that way at my new job. I have to seem interested. I have to seem stable. I have to not be a sourpuss. I have to act.

This acting is constrained, however: I don't lie. I have to not be grumpy or anything BUT I can't explicitly lie and say "I LOVE WORKING HERE." This balance between being positive and being honest is hard to strike.

Any of you act?

Maybe your best bet would be to find the good things about working and being there, and focus on that. You don't have to go to the extreme of saying you absolutely adore it, but finding a middle ground would be better than nothing, I guess. Easier said than done.

We all have to put on some sort of mask according to each situation's requirements. Is there any way you can be closer to your family?

Good advice. See the positive without lying to myself about the bad.

For at least a year, no, I won't be eligible for moving to one of the company's locations that are closer to home.

Hey I get you. It's the way this world is. Everybody will have to put up a public face to fit the bill. But if you absolutely don't have one thing you like about the job and the people you're working with, you should consider switching job or doing something that you enjoy more. I personally don't work well in corporate environment. I feel constrained and under-utilized. So I switched to something better. For the time being, tough it out and do something you like on the weekends, talk to friends and vent. It'll help with the frustration. Good luck!

Appreciate the feelz!

I'd like to clarify what I said real quick. For what's it's worth, I don't think I have anything against this company specifically. It's just the whole "adult" thing. Lots of stress, nervousness, heart-beating-fast-ness, sweat, etc. So, for example, there's nothing about this company in particular that I disapprove of. Thus, I'd probably hate nearly any other job. In all honestly, most of the people in this place have been great so far.

I guess it's the old relationship cliche: "It's not you, it's me."

Thanks again.
