Is it ok to ask for accomodations at work b/c of SA? Would that make sense or hurt the way you look to employees and employers?

It SHOULD be that way, hopefully can be. It's okay yeah but at a newspaper Idk; I dont know much about it but lots of varying personalities, etc. depends on the boss; sometimes you just can't.

It's quite illegal (at least in the U.S.) to fire, not promote, etc someone because of disabilities, but it's very easy to bypass those laws. In real life asking for any sort of accommodations is likely to look bad--it probably depends on how good your relationship is with your employers.

But you have to prove SA is a disability in this case? Clinically diagnosed?

Which requires both the doctors official diagnosis and explaining to the employer exactly what the problem is (which they may still not understand or believe), on top of letting your employer know that it's more trouble to deal with you than another employee. Good times!

^not to mention that so many job descriptions require an employee to be able to interact with other people - how do you accommodate that?

if in the course of accommodating your disability, you are no longer doing the work for which you were hired, then they are not obligated to keep you in THAT position.

if they choose to keep you, they are effectively creating a NEW position - this could, in turn, affect the conditions of your employment (hours, wages, benefits, etc.)

be careful what you ask for

^Yup all wise words up there.

Sure we have all these laws and rules to accomodate us, but the truth is most can be bent or ignored. Yeah depends on the type of relationship you have with your supervisors and if your job requires you to be social.

I know for me, with filmmaking, it's not possible. On a crew... can't hide. Writer too; but then I dont WANT to hide away. Even tho that's my natural inclination, flight and avoid the situation. No mas. Hard and foolish as I'll be it's what's gotta be done =)

I know Nicole just started CBT, I know she'll be for the better in her situation eventually. It's tough; esp still ppl view mental disorders, esp Social Anxiety with one rolled eye. Lucky to get an understanding supervisor/boss, but they exist. =)
