Blocking out negative thoughts
Sometimes I can block out negative thoughts for a couple of hours and feel better, but it's taking all my energy to do that. I can't concentrate on anything else when I'm busy blocking out these automatic negative thoughts. I can't hear what people say because I'm so busy neutralizing my negative thoughts, for example. Anyone else have the same problem? :?

Re: Blocking out negative thoughts
Thoughts are one thing, actions are another.
If I have negative thoughts (and I have plenty of those, believe me) I wouldn't waste energy trying to suppress them. I let them live. However, I don't believe in keeping still when I'm in a state like that, because those negative thoughts will only gather momentum. I like to do something, anything, that is in some way positive.
For example, even if I wake up in the blackest of moods, I still put on my tracksuit and I go out running. The negative thoughts may still be there as I run, but I still keep on going regardless.
What I find is, when I get back home and get freshened up, I have a better perspective on things.
I've been out. I've done something. I've breathed fresh air. I may even experience a natural "high" from the exercise. It could be a combination of all these things. Who knows? But because I've done something, I don't feel so bad towards the end of the day.
I used sport as an example, but there are many other things you could do. Even if it's just housework, redecorating your house or fixing the car...just do something that has, in some way, a positive outcome.
It really helps me.

I totally agree. If I "waste" an entire day (as I usually do) doing absolutely nothing, there is no way to block out negative thoughts. I am my own worst enemy..

A few minutes ago I was really really really depressed, to the point where I started getting mad and started slamming things...All because of the negative thoughts. But what I do is I sing to take my mind off the negative thoughts, then I meditate. Now all of a sudden I'm perfectly happy!
Try it!

well I dont know what came first... my own negative thoughts i have of myself. Or others criticisms of me.
I feel like maybe i did let negative get to me, but lately have had extremely CRITICAL way too personal comments made about me, and this in no way helps.
Not only am i trying to fight off negative thoughts in my own mind, but also others' views of me. :( :( :( :(

real interaction
I undertand your situation, Argamemnon. I never get my negative thoughts blocked out in social situation. So, I decided to go away from these situations. In real contact doesnīt work thinking of other things, you have to listen to the person, ask question, give your opinion with respect, wear his another personīs shoes (symphatetic), look their eyes. So much effort. :(
