Dear Evan Hansen - A musical about a teen with social anxiety

There is a new musical opening on Broadway this November called Dear Evan Hansen. It's about a senior in high school who has social anxiety and he writes a letter that gets misinterpreted and he finds himself wrapped up in a lie.

As soon as I heard that the main character had social anxiety and no friends, I knew that I had to see this show. I love musicals to begin with, but I was very excited to see that social anxiety/loneliness/isolation was going to be the topic of a musical. I just saw it in May when it was Off-Broadway and the show was incredible and Ben Platt's (he was in Pitch Perfect) performance as the highly anxious Evan Hansen was very, very moving. I was seriously sobbing because I related to the main character so much. I didn't even have a friend to go see the show with. I live near Boston so I took the train from Boston to NYC to see this show all by myself. And once it comes to Broadway, I will be doing the same thing again because I want to see this show again so badly and I don't care if I have to go see it alone.

Here is one of the main songs from the show called, "Waving Through a Window."

"On the outside always looking in
Will I ever be more than I've always been"

^that was beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

I am a fan of musicals myself, but I live on the other coast. I also attend shows on my own, but I enjoy the solitude. I'm glad that you got the chance to enjoy the play, and I love that you didn't let anything deter you from going.

I will keep looking to see if it comes to LA, I'd definitely love to see it.

Update: Dear Evan Hansen opened on Broadway on December 4, 2016 and it is receiving rave reviews! I bet they will win numerous Tony's at the Tony Awards this year. If you live in or around NYC, I would definitely recommend going to see this musical. This story feels so personal to me since it is about a lonely character with a lot of anxiety, and it is nice to see people responding so positively to this musical.

I first saw it back in May when it was Off-Broadway and since then I have seen it two more times on Broadway (once by myself and once with my mom). It makes me cry so much cause I relate to the main character so much.

Here is a performance they did on Late Night with Seth Meyers:
