Do you consider yourself an introvert, or an extrovert?

As opposed to dividing the human population into three groups consisting of introverts, extroverts, and ambis?

Well I don't think the introverted/extroverted ness thing is a division...I think that's more of a scale that people fall on. I think while people might sit more often at a point on the scale, we generally slide, moving around as outside factors influence which is exhibited. (As said by many others on the thread, social anxiety can often make people seem more introverted than they otherwise would be. Likewise alcohol can make people seem more extroverted than they otherwise would be.)

I've been thinking about it with this thread and I don't think I could pin myself down as one or the other. I now think that there are very few people who are absolute introverts or extroverts. There are times for most of us where we draw energy from others, even if it is only online. And many times when people draw energy from being alone. At this point in the thread reading what others have said and having thought about it a bit more, I don't think people generally are one or the other. I think we mostly occupy one place on a scale which can change due to outside factors.

But yea, I tried the personality test on myself and ...nope, didn't fit me at all. It reminded me of reading a star sign.

they say introverts focus inward, and extroverts outward. I don't think it necessarily determines sociability. you can be a normal level socializer and be introvertive. ppl with the extrovert mentality tend to get more done in life because they're straightforward and blunt... but miss a lot of details and much of life's intricate beauty only an introvert can detect and tap into.

Personality type systems can also be considered to be a sliding scale (Within the general framework of a person's type), and I often refer to it as such, but if you're determined to not take interest, then that's your choice, no problem :)

I agree with you to a point, and this is where mbti helps greatly with understanding the distinctions. What you seem to be describing here is an Intoverted iNtuitive... An INxP more specifically. Intuitives are more abstract, conceptual, imaginative, and "big picture", Introverted Sensates however are more "sensible", concrete, straightforward, and would rather deal with straight facts and "here and now". Although I do agree that introverts generally tend to take in more, deeper thinkers, more introspective, etc

I'm not very chatty. Unless I sit down with someone 1-on-1 and we both have some kind of connection.

So whatever the meaning of extrovert and introvert is...

I am self conscious so I focus and worry about the noise and chatter around me, so I am not focussed internally and instead worry about external noise and people ....

I'm very introverted. Every personality test I have had to take for college and work purposes always direct me in the 95%-100% of introversion. I long for the day that I am able to be an extroverted person who doesn't constantly think about if what I said or didn't say was the wrong thing to say. I have been given many opportunities to capitalize on bettering myself, but most of the time I don't follow through and I keep my mouth shut.
