so that they might understand where you are coming from, why you are the way you are? That if you don't tell them, they will think less of you, or misunderstand/misinterpret you or judge you?

So **** them. Who cares? People judge each other all the time - it's human nature. Here's the key to the matrix: we choose whether or not it affects us. The funny thing is, the less we care about other people judging us, the more they respect us. One of the many paradoxes of the human condition.
