Driving Test Day Nerves - muummy!!

Hey guys.

I want to ask whether I should waste my time and anxiety on making an extra special trip to my oh so impersonal doctor's practice for something;

The problem I have is with anxiety that has built up around a specific event. Most of the time I put unbelievable pressure on myself to succeed, so when it goes horribly wrong I get ill from depression for months on end.

Soon I will be taking my practicle motorbike test. I know for certain how I will feel on the morning of the test - dizzy, nauseous, clumsy, on the brink of a panic attack. Now I can practice and practice but my problem is that even though I know I can pass and that I am a safe and sensible driver, those test-day nerves will get the better of me. I may even be so dizzy that it wouldn't be safe to ride.

So, can a doctor prescribe anything to help me get through such an event? Or will most anti-anxiety medicines mean that I get nicked for driving under the influence? 8O

And if its unlikely I can get medical help, does anyone have any tips that I can use on the day to help me relax?

aw mamba, i'm sorry to hear you're prone to suffer from depression! that makes my heart hurt b/c you're so comical on the site i wouldn't have thought. i guess it gets the best of all of us sadly...

weeeeell have you tried performance anxiety meds? like propranolol, xanax, etc? i doubt that they would get you for being under the influence or anything, otherwise they wouldn't allow people to drive will taking them - however i have seen on my paxil bottle to use caution when taking it while driving but i think that's for the side effects so i don't think you have anything to worry about. when is the test? as in, do you have time to try something out to see how you feel? i think that would be worth doing.

if nothing else, you might consider calling the place and asking if the meds would be ok just be sure. i think it would help you in the long run to feel good about taking the test (and passing it b/c i know you will :D ) and give you some confidence in the future so you're not so suceptable (sp??) to being so hard on yourself.

but, alot of times i'm so sure that i'm going to mess up b/c of my anxiety and things turn out well. i kind of get an adrenaline high. so you might surprise yourself! it might be worth the shot too. have some faith in yourself and give it a go. plus i was so nervous about my regular driving test and we ended up going around the block, backing up, and going back lol so maybe you'll have a good driver too (who's also prolly used to people who are nervous. who isn't during the tests?)

good luck and tell us what you decide!

Hey Black_Mamba

I dont realy have any advice for you but what i do want to say is i envy you, i done my CBT (Compulsary Basic Training and not the SA type CBT for those that dont know  ) a good few years ago and wanted to do my full bike test but by that time my SA was worse and now my CBT has ran out and the thought of going through it all again just puts me off, all i can say is when you are doing the test just pretend to yourself that it is another lesson and just realx, i know that is easier said than done. When are you taking the test and i will keep my fingers crossed for you on the day  ( not that you will need it )

!!!!! GOOD LUCK !!!!!

p.s iam still smilling at the picture :D :D :D :D :D

Hehe don't waste your envy on me - I'm envious of all the bikers who zoom past my flat everyday & I'm crapping myself about the lessons, hell even phoning the training centre to book them is terrifying. It took me two attempts to pass both my theory and CBT training, and on both the occasions I failed I went into a massive long term depression. I kinda wish I'd never realised my passion for bikes, then I wouldn't have to face all these fears.

Wow still smiling? It makes me happy knowing I made someone else smile. As Cartman would say; keewl.

Hey Chilling echo, thankyou for the positive reply. :) I've never sought medical help for my SP other than the one time - my doc refered me to a counsellor and I chickened out of the meeting.

I actually don't think my doctor will prescribe me any medication before I speak to a counsellor first. In that sense I don't mind explaining the situation again, but its a waste of time for both of us. Would asking the doc outright for specific medication be appropriate?

Woohoo, really?

I use my university doctor's practice and all the docs and nurses in their gossip alot. I will try one doctor but I doubt they'll take me seriously a second time.

Gonna try though, I'm gagging to go for bike ride in the sun. *thumbs up*

Thankyou guys.

My advice would be not to take any meds prior to your test as I found even something as gentle as rescue remedy made me slightly more clumsy during my lessons and so more likely to forget something or do something wrong on my test! For my car test I didn't take anything and just put up with the anxiety and nerves in return for 100% concentration. Yea, I was shaking when I got in the car and I was nervous and embarressed but I did everything right and passed first time. Give yourself every possible chance at having a clear focused mind when going into your test :)
