Experiences with Sage and/or Magnesium

Has anyone tried using sage either in tea or capsule form, to control hyperhidrosis? I am going to try it since I've read it is the best natural remedy for it.

Has anyone tried using magnesium supplementation? I'm beginning to try this (a tablet containing 500mg Calcium and 250mg Magnesium daily). I have seen a few articles on the internet saying magnesium supplementation can reduce sweating, but nothing really authoritative.

I suffer from hyperhidrosis of the head, face, back and groin areas. It is triggered by the normal things of heat and exercise, however I find that even light exercise like walking (not running) up a hill can leave me dripping with sweat. Although I am a little overweight (I weigh 90kg) I have at least an average level of fitness since I go cycling regularly as well as going to the gym and doing cardiovascular work twice a week.

Although I have tried strong antiperspirants such as Driclor, it is not possible to apply these to all of the areas I have mentioned.

Has anyone had experience of oral medication for generalised hyperhidrosis of the kind I suffer from?

I think there is some difference with the sage. I've been taking it for a week now.

I went cycling this afternoon, after riding for just over an hour I was sweating, but it wasn't dripping off me like it sometimes is. And the back of my jersey was damp rather than wet.

It is a warm spring afternoon here (18C - high 60s F I think.) However it is a clear day so perhaps the air is just dry enough that my sweat is evaporating as fast as it comes.

A website called healthydirect.

I'm not sure whether it is actually working all that well. I went hillwalking last weekend and found myself dripping with sweat from the head and face almost as quickly as usual.

I think it was just when I was cycling the other day there was sufficient wind generated by my motion to evaporate the sweat quickly.

I know you are supposed to sweat to a certain extent during exercise, but it seems I sweat a lot more easily than most people. It spoils my enjoyment of things like walking if my clothes are wet all the time.

I think I will try to talk to my doctor about medication. Has anyone had experiences, good or bad with medication?

I tried the sage tea thing and didn't notice any significant effects. After a few days of taking a cup a day I read in a herb book that too much could cause liver damage so I got scared and stopped taking it. Then I heard about Avert(Glycopyrrolate) and did some research so that is what I take now (2mgs/once a day) The side effects are worth feeling dry under situations that would usually have me dripping sweat all over. I experience a bit of dry mouth and it makes me kind of drowsy. I work around that by drinking water, sucking on mints and drinking tea for the caffeine. They also come in the form of wipes and the glyco is also known as Rubinol..I am very happy with it and enjoying doing things I couldn't do before...It takes my body a long time to absorb it so it sucks to wait around for it to kick in before I go out..it also loses effectiveness on me if I sleep after taking it..I don't know why..I'm just grateful it works for me.
i highly recommend it to all hh sufferers. Hope that helped and hope you find relief. I wish you good luck.

I spoke to my GP yesterday about excessive sweating. She didn't know much about treatments for HH, however she is going to refer me to a dermatologist which must be progress.

What I find worst is the following two things, the uncomfortable feeling of wetness on the back and the sweat dripping off my face.

I always get a very sweaty back if I go walking wearing a rucksack. So I have the choice either between this horrible wet feeling or else wearing only the wicking baselayer on top and getting cold in the wind. And walking in the rain is horrible, to the extent that wearing a waterproof coat is almost pointless because I'll get wet from the inside.

I find wearing a wicking fabric baselayer is much better than wearing a conventional cotton T-shirt. The sweat doesn't really show on the former, and evaporates easily. A cotton T-shirt however once it gets wet tends to stay wet. And unless you wear black all the time sweat patches are obvious.

The other problem I sometimes have is groin sweating, resulting in chafing on the inner thighs, and a rash. If I'm walking around a lot especially in warm weather this sometimes occurs. I find Sudocrem is useful in this situation.

Does it work? Are there any side effects worth mentioning?

My HH is more localized than yours, but Avert (=Robinul) helps tremendously.

Side effects? For me some dry mouth--not that bad. It can make your heart race, apparently--my pharmacy source wouldn't give it to me until my doctor approved it.

It would be nice if something as simple as sage worked--but can't see how it could do that much.

I saw the dermatologist today, he wants me to try probanthine, however he needs to check up on whether it is ok with another medication I'm taking at the moment.

PRO-BANTHINE: Side effects, ratings, and patient comments

Mate I am eating Probanthine since a month back. It gave me some relieve to start with, but I guess I didn't adjust the dose good enough because I am currently being bombarded with medications from my Chinese doctor in order to try to stabilize my ANS. However, the drug has a potential to help. Just do not be to careful with following the doctors instruction on the dose; it's individual. If one isn't enough, try to and so on.

As for me, I would like to try Robinul instead. I have higher hopes for that one. But they can't find it in China for some reason. Mate we should keep in touch, we seem to have the same problem; sweating from every part of the body.

Hello there,

I have tried quite a few Chinese remedies for my HH, none of which worked very well. But for this maybe I am to blame, since Eastern medicine is supposed to work over a long time, contrary to the Western school where cures are supposed to work within weeks or even days.

I tried acupuncture, herbs, massage, hammers and so on. I was on one of the most famous Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospitals in Beijing once a week or so. But after 5-6 times without results I didn't go there anymore, partly because of impatience and partly because I can't keep the routines with my work (traveling much). Also Eastern medicine includes things as strict diet; early mornings etc. I simply can't cope with that for the moment, even though it might help a bit.

I was also seeking help not only for HH but also for palpitation, anxiety, blushing and a voice that falters whenever I am about to do something important. Hence I went to a more modern hospital instead. But what I learnt from the Eastern school is that meditation some 20-30 minutes per day can give some relief for the anxious sweating. Acupuncture and herbs might be useful, but not for the short time of two months I was using it.

They also have a certain kind of massage which is called "cupping". They place some kind of plastic cups on your back which hurt a great deal, and when you are finished you have bruises over your whole back. It says to "draw sweat from the heart", I use to do it once a week, and it makes my muscles more relaxed and hence take away some "tense-sweating".

I am now on Inderal and Probanthine.

Hi Redbicycle, I sweat from the head, especially the face and the back, these are my two problem areas, even though I sweat pretty much everywhere I can deal with a little bit of sweat.
I walk the dog for an hour twice a day, on the walk Im constantly wiping my face with tissues, adn my back is soaking. At the moment Im on propranolol, which I think helps a bit as when I dont take them I sweat even more.
I was on probanthine a few years back, it was amazing at first, however after a few months it lost its effectiveness.
I have also tried a few more medications as well but none that worked.
Let me know if you find something! I fed up of dripping!!!

xlisax: as from what other says, the effectiveness of Probanthine will come back again if you let your body be without the drug for a week or so, in order to "lose its defense" against the drug. If you eat it and you find it's not effective: just stop eating it for a week or two at it will be effective again.

As for anything concerning HH, this is individual. But in your case the drug will most likely be effective again, since you have waited years.

Good luck.
