ive swam for many years now (like...14 or so)...i wouldnt really consider it a good way to zone out and exercise though because when you are swimming you have lots of time to think about everything. I find it a useful way to give yourself pain without really hurting yourself though...didnt swim at all last year though i was to scared to go to the pool without going with someone i know well...wish i could start swimming again.

As for some hobbies that help me relax..well...videogames are a good escape although they dont always relax you...i dunno...sleeping is a good one :p

By zoning out do you mean you're concentrating so much on something other than your social problems you feel detached from that anxiety?

For me my hobbies actually induce some anxiety; drawing for example. I feel this innate urge to improve my skills everytime I draw. Or playing vid games, getting stressed out when I get stuck (and no, I do not use cheats or walkthroughs) :p ...I love theme parks but they're adrenaline inducing rather than relaxing, riding my bike? Hmm again more exilirating than anything.

 I don't have any relaxing hobbies!

Does feeding the local ducks with stale bread count as a pastime? :D

Yeah, but not nessessarally just social problems but getting away from everything and not haveing to worry about other stuff.

I think thats why i like gaming cause its like escapism. You temporaraly get away from the cares and responsiblities of the world.

I bmx, puts my mind of being negative, when i play drums i worry that im not good enough and my peers(who all are very musical) won't appreciate. With bmx i don't feel that pressure to be good, i just do it for fun and in a non-competitive way.

I ride a bike, also. It is quite peaceful to slowly ride the length of my drive with my dogs, walking beside me. :D They seem to enjoy the trek as well. :D

when I first started skating outside & surfing I was really nervous about people watching me, etc but it doesn't bother me as much now

Intense conditoning exercise. Just today I did jumps and jump roping...my lower abs feel like I ate a box of razor blades. I almost stopped at 5 circuits but told that voice in my head telling to to stop to shut the hell up and finished all 10. The pain feels good

Masturbating...sorry its the truth.

Sailing in the summer. Go out just as the sun starts to go down and while there's still enough wind and circle that half sunken log 2/3 to the end of the lake...you just lay back as the boat slowly goes forward and you can see the nice houses and people getting ready for dinner...and I'm far away from people so that helps too

Hi, new to this forum and will definitely update a little about who I am at a later date but just wanted to add that without hobbies or interests I would go mad, and I have at one stage had none, so all I had to think about was my Sphobia and anxiety problems, I am more of a creative person so I make my own jewellery, thinking about learning to make my own glass beads too soon, sewing, mosaics, yoga (fabulous way to relax a busy mind such as mine and as a bonus you look fit and fabulous  ) spending hours in an old chair in a private corner of a old second hand bookstore or any bookstore for that matter, just to name a few  most are solitary hobbies that i do on my own, i have the option there if i wanted it to be more social maybe but if nothing else I have fun and it takes my mind of anxiety.

Welcome to the forum alwaysbeenshy. :)

I tryed yoga to and it's great, doing pilates now, they're kinda the same thing. It fixed my posture, relaxes me and yeah, it does make you look great :D

I have alot of hobbies, I'm impulsive with intrests so a bit generic with everything I've done. It keeps me sane to, feels like its the only way I can experience anything and have a life worth living. I'm studying Japanese just now, so all the things I'm doing right now are intertwined to force myself to use it. (In other words i'm lazy lol, but it helps me get things done). Video games, books, esp. music, writing and anime/movies.

Before this was playing the keyboard, but it's gathering dust right now. :(
Sitting in the bookstore sounds like a good idea, I'm trying to think of places I can go when I'm out, to make it worth while, its tough to feel like you're making progress when you have nowhere to go and can't enjoy being out..

Thanks for the welcome Amiyumi :D

Ohh, how fabulous to know a second language, I have always wanted to learn a 2nd language, too lazy i guess, i have good intentions and have bought a couple of spanish learn at home dvd's but they are getting very dusty on the shelves, one day ...

hi amiyumi, roxy and anyone that cares to comment :D

i am moving to sydney shortly and looking for yoga classes in the eastern suburbs, does anyone know of any good, small classes (being around too many people in a group scares me a little with the SocialPhobia), reasonably priced, i practice Ki yoga at the moment but thinking about maybe trying Iyenga or Hatha yoga.

Thanks, always been shy.

Ah, sorry alwaysbeen shy, I'm in Scotland.

I think you'll find a small enough class if you look around enough, and you can get classes just for women too, if that helps.

I practice at home, well, being housebound and all. I went through a few books, dvd's, and eventually found someting that works for me. Here I find that colleges do lesure courses for things like that, and numbers can be limited, it's worth a look. :)

I tried learning Portugese years ago, when I was 15, but I had problems then and didn't have the motivation.
I'm gonna take a part time course near the end of the year, I don't wanna have to be around people too much, just get practice of what I've been teaching myself. I know I'm not ready to handle attention, having to maintain real life friendships or going out, so taking baby steps, doing what I can.

Cooking is relaxing, but only when I have one of my family to sit in and talk wif me, I can't explain it, just a nice atmosphere.

Jewllery making sounds cool, heh, maybe one day.

thanks, that's ok Roxy, amiyumi, i too do it from home with a dvd but really want to challenge myself and get out there to a small class, even if it is only 1 or 2 days a week and the rest of the time i can still practice at home, i really am getting sick of being house bound and not having any friends since i have moved from my home state to the other side of Australia i dont think yoga is the type of environment to make friends but i will still be around other people than myself  have had a look and there are lots of yoga centres in sydney, just plucking up the courage to actually go!

oh and amiyumi, give making jewellery a go, its lots of fun, therapeutic, something you can do from home, you can still make some pretty cool stuff relatively simple by learning from the internet or buying a dvd to teach yourself, i am at the stage now where i want to make my own beads, check out lampworketc.com for some inspiration and motivation (although with making your own beads you may need to go to a short course as it looks a little tricky to pick up on your own) and beadingforum.com.au (aussie site but still very good info and tips) seriously give it a go, i never used to give anything a go for fear of failure but i have learnt to give things a go, yeah i make heaps of mistakes and things usually turn out looking pretty crappy to start with but i still have heaps of fun and eventually like everything after practice i get the satisfaction of trying hard at something and it turning out looking pretty special! Ha can you tell im a scary beadaholic!

Thanks, I've always seen starter tool kits n stuff when I went to art stores. Jewllery making from scratch sounds tough, I'll take a look, I'm curious now lol. But they had beads n sequins etc if you couldn't make ur own, I used to buy stuff like that for books I made, (pre made blank book and wrapping it in silk) adding beads and the right accessories make stuff like that so beautiful, but they did start off pretty crappy to. but it's lots of fun.
Making scrapbooks is good, if you draw you can add velums for cards over them or Japanese paper.

Ha I think I've took up alot of stuff, but taking into account I've spent my life in isolation. I didn't know you were housebound alwaysbeenshy, I hope moving works out for you. We moved house bout 7 years ago and it was a new start for me, best of luck with it. :D
