Hi Honestjeenn. I have met quite a few people who have had success with medical billing as work from home jobs. That's where you work as an independent contractor for doctor's offices and such handling their billings. If you don't mind, can you share what you currently do online?

I am working in a company where I am just listening calls.

What company hiring medical billings? Is that a transcriptionist?

There isn't really one company that does the hiring. You have to contact different doctor's offices to offer your services and work as an independent contractor. When I was interested in doing it, I would go to forums like this one Medical Biller's Forum to find out more on how to go about it. The site listed is pretty informative but you have to join (free of charge) to get the good information.

Well, I think that in the long run that doing anything to evade social interaction will make your SA worse. So trying to find work from home will, in my opinion, harm you more than do good.
That being said... I guess the best "work from home" jobs are those where you offer specific skills or products. Like, if you are a programmer, you create websites or whatnot.

I'm pretty sure that 90% of those home based jobs that require no specific skills are scams and rip offs or horribly paid and dull.

Still, I wish you the best that you find what you're looking for.

I just remembered one of my favorite sites for making money online is InboxDollars® - Earn Cash for E-Mail, Surveys, Games, and More! . You can take surveys for them and earn extra money (although small amounts per survey but they don't take long). Also, you can play tournament games and they will pay you for that. Actually, there's a huge variety of ways they will pay you for things. You just have to log on and take a look. Sign up if you like it.

A word of caution. If you do decide to make extra money with inbox dollars, set up a free email account on yahoo or somewhere and use it exclusively for the surveys and offers. Although they will pay you, most of those surveys are just looking for new people to contact and will ask for your email address. If you don't want your primary email account flooded with offers, spam and advertisements be sure not to give it to the surveyors!

Me again! I wanted to give an update. After getting signed up with Scribie (they make you wait a long time before certifying you) and making a little $$ with them, I began to get curious about other online transcriber jobs. A quick search brought me to www.mturk.com

If you're unfamiliar with this, it is very legit as this is Amazon's freelance section. As a matter of fact, if you already have an account with Amazon and are signed on, when you go to mturk.com, your information will already be there waiting for you to register for work. You can choose numerous, small freelance jobs there where you work at home from your computer. Their transcribe section is called Casting Words PPT. Unlike with Scribie, you can sign up immediately and begin work shortly thereafter. There seems to be a never ending amount of little jobs available from all kinds of companies (currently, they list 287,554 jobs which they call "Hits"). Admittedly, many of them seem to pay small amounts but there are so many of them that seem to take little time that it can easily add up. Also, you can filter the jobs to match the minimum you will work for. I hope this helps someone! I know I plan to take full advantage of it.

With Mechanical Turk you can make $40 bucks per month, if you're lucky and very fast.

If you're super average or not very quick, I would expect that to go down by half, if not less.

I've looked into Mechanical Turk, seriously. It's a rat race like anything else--the brilliant or highly skilled get the higher paid jobs, the rest have their choice of anything between 5 and 10 cents per task. It is an online sweatshop and little more.

Hmm, my experience with Mechanical Turk seems to be quite different from yours. Admittedly, I haven't been on for long and haven't taken advantage of many of the jobs offered. Nevertheless, even with my lazy efforts (I plan to focus more on it from today forward) I have made roughly $30 in a week, mostly from transcribing. Even that would equate to around $120 per month. While heavy computer usage has made me a pretty good typist, I am no where near very lucky or unusually fast. I would put my skill in the average range. I think good focus and strategy make a big difference. For example, I don't even waste my time with the jobs they offer that pay under $5. I just filter those out and concentrate on the ones that pay higher. I do think you have to be pretty good to complete some of the jobs that pay over $20 but I haven't looked into those thoroughly yet. I have to say that so far I am pretty happy with Mechanical Turk but maybe I just had an unusually good week (?). Nevertheless, here are some more legit work from home sites I have found:

Microworkers - work & earn or offer a micro job

Work at Home, Make Money Online, Paid Work at Home, Online Jobs - ShortTask.Com

RapidWorkers - Quality micro jobs at low cost

Work From Home | CloudCrowd - We're working on it. Lots of us.

CrowdFlower | The World's Leading Crowdsourcing Service.

Crowdtap - Where Consumers and Brands Collaborate

Samasource

JobBoy : Small Jobs Made Easy - Home

Please note that I am not endorsing the sites I just listed above and you should proceed at your own caution. I found them to be highly rated while doing my searches and none are scams where they ask you to pay a fee or are pyramid schemes. I just wanted to share them with anyone who may be in need and to save you some footwork in searching.

Thanks for the list.

Perhaps I was just pessimistic about MTurk, I didn't really even try it, but it is true that many if not most tasks pay between 5 and 10 cents (and I'm not even joking.)

I have to ask, what exactly does a transcriber do? Is it listen to audio and write it down in words?

If so, I could do that, but getting the $5 jobs or more I think you need some kind of reputation beforehand right? Also I've heard sometimes they don't even pay, and MTurk can't do anything about that. And then, as if that wasn't bad enough, I heard you have to report your meager earnings from the site for taxes.

You are correct about the transcriber jobs. You just listen to audio and type up what they are saying. It can be a challenge because sometimes people speak so fast that you can't really understand a word or two in the sentence they are speaking. Fortunately, most of these types of files have a rewind feature so you can listen to the sentence over and over again. I just do my best and so far my files have been accepted. The $5 jobs aren't that difficult to qualify for. You just have to pass whichever competency test the company is offering. Most are pretty easy and they often just want you to demonstrate that you understand the English language. The higher paying jobs, I still haven't really explored yet as far as their competency tests go. Probably requires a higher skill level as I've noticed some of them involve captioning videos. I could probably do that but have never before.

The only bad experience I've had with not getting paid is one file that I completed and submitted didn't show in my account as submitted so it looks like I chose it but didn't do anything with it. I wrote the company to tell them but I don't know what will come of it (I wasted about 20 minutes on that one). Oh well, I guess anything you are getting paid for will have its' frustrations. And, yes, you do have to report your earnings for taxes, at least in America you do. When I joined I was really hoping I wouldn't have to...lol.

There have been days in the past where I've sat in front of the computer almost all day with nothing to show for it. At least this gives me something to do where I will have felt I accomplished something.
