Hi this is my first post on this forum, i'm 18 from north wales UK. I was told ive got social anxiety disorder two weeks ago by NHS first access, they told me that they would phone me to organise individual and group therapy by monday this week, they havn't, ive left five messages and no ones got back to me.
I got expelled from college in september because i didnt turn up for three weeks, was out of work from then until christmas when i managed to get a job in a factory working a night shift but couldnt face it and left after a month, ive been out of work sinse then. Spent almost a year housebound and i'm goin nuts! I prety much isolated myself from my friends this time last year, still in touch with three of them but rarely see them.
I really am feeling traped, ive got a progressive view on life and have realistic goals but im getting depressed again and desperatly need to sort myself out.
Any advive, recomended books/websites would be greatly apreciated. I need to talk to someone about SA

thanks for reading x

Hi philip, my situation is pretty similar to yours..I got expelled from college too cos of not turning up. I've been sorta housebound for a while but am getting back into work now

2 *great* books, they both use a CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) approach, one is specifically for SA, one is designed for depression but gives a very thorough technique for CBT which can easily be applied to SA as well. You can find them both at Amazon...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Feeling-Goo...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207936639&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207936677&sr=8-1

I also recommend this website for its mindfulness techniques which can be extremely useful for becoming more aware of your thoughts:

And here's another SA site, with its own forum:

http://www.socialanxietysupport.com

Remember your SA has been built up over time and it will likely take time to bring it down. Change might be slower than you think so don't get discouraged if nothing happens right away.

Personally I had a very bad experience with the NHS...after seeing my doc several times they finally said I would have to take anti-depressant drugs long before I could get any treatment, on top of that the waiting list was very long, several months. However I think if you were guaranteed the treatment you should definitely go back to your doc. and sort it out

Good luck :p

Try Klonopin. It has saved my life. I use it only when I go out (I was housebound for 20+ years) and no ore than twice a week because it is very addictive.

It was the ONLY thing that got me out of the house after years of therapy, gimmicks, courses, etc. but I did it in an unconventional way. I took large doses to get out. I don't recommend this to anyone--it is your decision and you should talk to a doc.

Most docs will say "no", but I did find one who okayed it. She said I could take up tp 7mg at one time. Again, this might not be right for you and even dangerous depending on your tolerance and body weight.

I go out regularly now and my, how the world has changed while I was in my "cave.

Good luck.
