How do I improve visual memory?

I used to play chess competitively. One of the exercises was to visualize a chess board in your mind... I can't do that. I can't even visualize a quarter of a chessboard properly...

Ah, I see what you mean. I find I can't visualise a clear, focused visual image either. If I try to visualize a chess board, I get the impression of a chess board rather than an actual chess board with clear detail that I could actually describe. I can focus in on one small part, and describe that in detail, but I can't seem to hold a detailed mental image of the whole thing. My brain would appear to work like a camera which has a very shallow depth of field. :)

Yup :) So how to increase it then? You know... like make it more and more clear each day... I've tried practicing quite a bit over the years... but I've only gone from a 3 by 3 to a 4 by 4 and that took me ages. Thanks for the feedback btw. It'll be great if there's a forum about these kind of things. I've seen some forums that deal with puzzles, but this isn't actually a puzzle. More like a basic ability.

I'm not sure that it's even possible to learn how to do it. I think that people with eidetic memories can just do it because that's the way their brains are wired up.

What's a DS? :)

@ Rembrandt: I used to be able to do it as a kid. I read that most people have some eidetic capability as kids but lost it as they grew up. Btw, Rembrandt is one of my favorite painters!

A Nintendo DS?The handheld one. They have a lot of brain training games on them (which are surprisingly addictive!)

Not sure if it's what your looking for though. But these games get you to practice things like visual memory and test you on it daily

Why do you want to do this?

Anyways, here are some ways that you can improve your general cogntivie ability:

1. Exercise
2. Eat healthy food.
3. Read alot
4. Do a lot of creative things
5. Solve lots of interesting problems ( they have to be novel, rather than routine like sudoku)
6. Become happier
7. Take up music as a hobby
8. Play lots of chess games.
