How do you define "friend"

A friend is someone who I am able to talk to comfortably about anything... Someone who I am there for and who is also there for me. It can take years for an acquaintance to become a "friend"... I have no friends (Except my husband of course, who is the best friend I've ever had!).

I have two types of friends...the first are close friends, which aren't many and then just friends, who are people that are acquaintances.

The above would probably be someone I consider a "friend."

Someone who likes you for who you are and not for what you can do for them. Someone who confides in you. Someone who listens to you. Beyond that, everything else is a plus or minus you both accept in the other.

There are all kinds of friends I have learned, and they don't have to know my deepest secrets to be my friend. I have had a difficult time with this, especially when I was younger and in school. I had very high expectations of those I considered friends. But people are not perfect. Sadly for me, I learned this a little bit late and many of my friendships were destroyed by that line of thinking. What I hope to do now is be more tolerant. Everyone has flaws. Perhaps my mistake has been that I want my friendships to be close like the relationship I have with my sister, who is my best friend. No one will ever come close. But I can have others in my life. Of course, there have to be some requirements. I expect friends to be respectful, to want the best for me and not try to hurt me. Maybe those are still high expectations! In any case, my only friends are of the online variety these days.
