How do you upload an avatar/image?

I know this is not SA related, but how do you upload an avatar...It's just I see some of the others and they seem to be larger than 12 KB..how can I upload an image as avatar that's larger than 12 KB? Or can I condense the image?

You need to use an image editor, like gimp, to resize it. If it's a .png, resave it as a .jpg and that should make it small enough. Or, even if it's already a .jpg, when it prompts for the quality as saving, set the number lower until it goes below 12KB (as far as I've seen, 95 or so is always low enough).

There are also websites which will resize images, but they tend to just make the dimensions smaller.
