How to convince my parents to let me get an iPhone?!

So I'm 16 almost 17 and Im dying to get an iPhone. My current phone is a flip phone. Yes it sucks. I'm embarrassed of it and rarely even use it unless I'm at home. I go to a private rich kid school where almost everyone has iPhones. Probably like 10 out of 200 students don't have iPhones, including me. My family is nowhere near rich. My parents say it's a waste of money, I don't need one, and they will get me one when I graduate high school. I can't wait that long. I feel left out, lame/loser. I get weird looks. It's annoying and it makes me wanna cry. Is there any possible I can convince my parents that I can get an iPhone this summer before my senior year?! Please help. Thanks!

Wow, this is sad...but it reminds me of this episode of this old cheesy sitcom "still standing" where the teenage daughter kept begging her parents for an mp3 player(this was like 2002) and they said "no". And she was saying how all the cool kids had them. Then they found a new one under her bed and she either had stolen it or saved up and bought it and they just thought she stole it.
Anyway, there was some misunderstanding and hilarity ensued.
Actually it wasn't that funny come to think of it.

It sounds like an awful school.

I hate to be one of those people, and I know peer pressure can be tough... but believe it or not, your parents are right not to give in.

On the other hand, they're not the ones who are on the receiving end of it, so it's easier for them to resist it.

Maybe you could ask for a Samsung? A used 5th or 4th generation iPhone? Sometimes you can find them online and they're not so expensive.

On the other hand, the issue isn't always money... iPhones are the bane of teachers and parents everywhere and on top of that they aren't always good for the people who own them.

I have researched it online. The iPhone i want is free, it's just the $30 a month they have a problem with. I've offered to pay for it myself, but won't let me because of all the other expensives I have. I'm paying for my own car insurance $440 every six months and gas. Im also paying off my car. I buy my own clothes, makeup, sometimes food.

I have to admit, this is not the type of problem I experienced when I was your age.

But if you have a job and can pay for it, then I don't know what's stopping you.

I can only give you my opinion which is, you really don't need one. Just focus on your school work, that should be a lot more important than having a phone. I'm 30 so I'm young enough I suppose to see the desire to have a phone like that, but old enough that only half a dozen people had phones when I was in school. I personally dont have a smart phone cause I dont really see any need for it, I would only use it to store music but then I already have an iPod so why spend extra money?
Anyway, I know what its like to want nice stuff and not be able to have it, but try to think of it this way: youre almost out of school anyway right? So youll have plenty of time to get a phone and do as you please soon.

Convince them that it has a use beyond the need to fit in - say that you need it for the tracking app in case you get lost, or it has a much longer battery life, so its safer etc

Why specifically an Iphone? Never saw the appeal of pseudo fashion-item closed-system devices like that. Save a little money and get a Moto G 2nd, or wait for the recently announced Asus Zenphone 2 or something, those are much much cheaper and perfectly functional.
