Is it animal abuse?

What do you think on the topic of testing new medications on animals. Specifically, what restrictions do you think should be in place for testing new drugs on animals?

We started a discussion on this in a class on psychoactive drugs...and I realized I haven't yet defined my beliefs on this topic. But, some tests go WAY too far. I'm even surprised sometimes what type of experiments the board allows to happen at my university.

I don't think they should do them if it causes considerable pain to the animal and I think they should only do it as the last phase of testing. i.e. before they test it on humans.

The only thing that can stop this from happening is the consumer but this would never happen. Multinational companies can always move their operations to other countries where the laws are more relaxed. Its sad but there you go.

As I understand, they kill the animal after testing, regardless if the test has had any effects on it at all, I think that's wrong. You should try to preserve a life when you can.

There's no question that it is. Exposing innocent animals to potentially harmful substances. And the thing is, what might be completely non harmful to an animal of some kind could be harmful to humans anyway, so I don't really get it. Plus, can't we already replicate humans cells of most kinds and maintain it in some culture anyway?

If we want to advance medicine to save lives then its a no brainer... rather a mouse than a human life.

I dont agree with testing cosmetics on animals.

There's no need for medicines, it's all crap anyway. People would heal better with diet and not eating junk, sugar, refined and processed foods, animal products, additives etc. etc. Our society has everything upside down. In my opinion there is no need to test anything on animals, and such practice is always definitely wrong.

Perfectly said. I agree 100%.

Heck, this one's easy. Just take all those rapists and child molesters and stuff out of prison and put them to use serving humanity. The test results would obviously be more applicable to humans that way, too. :)!

I dont know if its real or not,but a video I saw a few year ago.
YouTube - Sovietian Experiment, FULL VIDEO - Part 1

YouTube - Sovietian Experiment, FULL VIDEO - Part 2

I wont pretend to know, but its posible they advanced a lot in surgery, transplants, drugs, rabbies vacine, drugs against venom, keeping people alive and etc, just remember this when a relative or even you need this.

I don't know much about this sort of thing either but I sometimes wonder if they can bring out products which they claim have never been tested on animals then how much animal testing is really necessary and how much of it is just done just to keep down the costs of testing these products?

I'm not sure if that's just rhetoric or if you really mean that. If you really mean that, I think it's a very ignorant view to hold.

On the topic of animal testing, many of you seem to hold a somewhat utilitarian view on the subject. However, keep in mind that it is sometimes the case that the same research that has humans as its end can provide benefits for animals as well. The concept of veterinarians would be laughable a couple centuries in the past.

Also, a few of you said that killing animals is outright wrong, and that it's important to preserve life to the best extent possible. What is your opinion on mercy killing -- do you think it's ethically good to put an animal out of its misery in order to save it from suffering for the rest of its life in an incapacitated state?

A mouse is a living creature just like you. No animal should be tortured and killed for that purpose. I'm pretty sure human race can find out other ways to test their stuff, if they can invent so many awesome things, they can do something about this too, right?. I'm sorry, but it angers me when I hear comments like that... A mouse is not any less than a human. Humans are not gods.

Agreed. Mice have feelings (nerve endings), they feel pain just like we do. Some "more intelligent" animals have both kind of feelings....nerve endings and emotional...just like we do.

IDK, do mice have emotional feelings? I haven't been around that many mice...

It's the egotistical and self centred nature of humans as a species that p****s me of. Like we think we're God's because we can build skyscrapers and cars and cities. We seem to revel in our blind belief that just because we're the most advanced species on the planet, its our right to destroy any animal or entire species that either gets in our way or might provide some use to us. End rant ::p:

What people generally refer to as emotions come from primitive parts of the brain that aren't much different between us and other mammals. Lust, fear, etc. If you have cats or dogs you've probably seen boredom, playfulness, jealousy...
