Hi ya'll...I am 22 years old, and have had social phobia since I was 14. By the time I was 17, I was living in self-imposed isolation. I dropped out of High School (got my GED though), and stopped all forms of therapy cuz I was just not finding it helpful at all. But now am I feeling slightly better. I have started getting out of the house 1 day a week to attend Weight Watcher meetings with my Aunt. Lately I have been really wanting to get a job, but am at a loss for what I can do. I don't have a license, so that already limits me, plus I would need something that I don't have contact with customers (i can deal with a boss and a few coworkers that I see regularly). Plus my limited education and experience makes me...well..not a catch. I was just hoping some of you could maybe give a few ideas? I tried talking to my mother about it, but she is the type of person to just make jokes. Anyway, any ideas you may have (preferably serious ones..lol) would be much appreciated. Thanks :)

the thought of working with customers did not agree with me at all and i ended up working in a factory for 5 years. it wasnt the best choice but it was the choice i made at the time.

maybe get a course in office work..
il have to think about that one...... hmm :?

maybe a video store will help get you into the swing. a store that is quiet and not stressful.

i was in the same boat but im trying to push myself to go further. it is taking some time but its working. just dont dive into the deep end.

Hmm, that's a toughy. I've been working since I was 18, first in medical and then switched over to admin. Both of those fields are nerve-racking, but at the time the only skills I possessed were within those specialties. I've been out of work for over a year now and have decided to wash my hands of administrative work altogether. There are many positives for an SP/SA in the administrative arena: desensitization, forced socialization. It really did help, but I'm pretty worn out by the rollercoaster ride and because of other issues aside from SP/SA I have decided to call it quits.

I think I'm really interested in getting into a field where I can be my own boss. I was actually considering being a fitness instructor/nutritionist since it goes along with my new lifestyle. I would have to go to school again but that is more inviting than having to do another sit on my butt all day job and counting to 100 over and over again while I stuff letters into envelopes. It would be nice to work my own schedule and not have to bend over for another.

Sorry I got a bit side-tracked. I think you should do what you like, though that is easier said than done and since you don't have a work history can also be difficult. I don't really know you so I don't know where your skills, preferences or interests lie. Many people who can't deal with people try to get into computer related jobs like computer programming or desktop publishing as well as the computer gaming industry. I've met some pretty socially awkward people in the mechanic field. Up to you. Just watch out for your health on sitdown jobs. Sorry I couldn't be of much more help.

Although I've never had a manual labor kind of job, I think anything that is typically "blue collar" would be a good start. There are so many jobs out there which don't involve working with customers, in which you either use the skills you have or gain skills on the job. Usually you will have to work with a few other people, but not masses of strangers as in retail. My brother works in a small machine shop. It pays about $10/hour, but he has very little interaction with customers. There are about 5 guys that work there total and they get along great.

Good luck!

a manual labor kind of job

That's pretty much what it's going to be.

 Try a temp or 'day labor' agency. You go in in the morning, look at the jobs available, decide if you want to do any of them and then go do it. Usually all they ask is that you complete the entire work day, and when it's over you get paid the same day. If the job sucked, and most of them do (putting inserts into newspapers, sawmill, roofing, detailing cars, etc.), pick a different job the next day. And you only work when you want to. The pay is probably between $10-15/ hour with no benefits. Some of these temp positions actually lead to full-time gigs, so you might get lucky. Be advised, some of these day labor places are like carnival side shows; alot of freaked-out characters, malcontents, wannabees, and sticky-glue traps 8O.

 Load/ unload trucks. It's just you and thousands of boxes of redundant crap that needs to be stacked on pallets. If you're fast, you can do a load in (4) hours @ $100-150/ load cash. Do (2)/ day and you're set 8). The only person you deal with is the truckdriver while making the deal, and maybe the receiver at the end for the count. But since the receiver will treat you with contempt, he will probably ignore you, which is what you want anyway, right? You'll wind up in great shape too. Be advised, some of these warehouses are like carnival side shows; alot of freaked-out characters, malcontents, wannabees, and sticky-glue traps 8O.

 Drive a truck. They'll teach you how and pay you $35-40k your first year. Be advised, almost anything associated with truckdriving is like a carnival side show; alot of freaked-out characters, malcontents, wannabees, and sticky-glue traps 8O.

None of these jobs are particularly desirable or prestigious, but they do pay the bills and don't require alot of credentials. I knew drivers (that learned how to drive in prison), who were making $50k+/ year.

I guess the point is. Bust your ass doing these jobs. Save alot of money (which will give you alot of options) and move on to better things like college or the Longshoreman's Union .

Hope that helps.

Good Trying. Keep Going  .
