Hey. I'm 18, from ON. I'm just wondering what kinds of jobs you guys have. I'm trying to figure out what I want to be "when I grow up" and I can't think of many professions that don't involve talking to people or being seen, so... if anybody has any advice, let me know. :)

You should have something which you are interested in. From the day i got my first computer i knew i wanted to associate my future with it, and i became a technical writer.

Hi Aime_e

At 18 you have plenty of time to think about what you want to do. I felt the same way as you did when I was your age. Im now 33 years old and Ive been a police officer for about 8 years. I had to work extremely hard to get where I'm at today. I suffer from setbacks from time to time, but in the end, I was glad I didnt avoid my biggest fears...

Oh, so glad you wrote that. I'm studying to be a teacher, and I'm scared that this is a bad idea...but it's what I want to do and I want to believe that I can get up in front of a group of teenagers and speak....

im a carpenter and a pipefitter.......they really dont match...but it works for me.My job doesnt give me to tough a time with sf as i guess im more scared of being poor than being nervous of others......i have just started cognitive behavieral treatment and it seems to help good luck with your career choice................J

I'm studying to become an engineer. The reason I wanted to study engineering was because it's a relatively safe career for a guy with SA.

If you want to work alone, then become a flooring installer. Im a tile setter but I plan on getting out of the business because it's hard on my back and knees but heck if you don't mind, then it's a good career. Im getting sick of it myself though. Alot of trades are solitary jobs. But the people always seem miserable. Some are happy though.

What kind of engineer idunnoimnotcreative? Im thinking about switching into a auto tech career. It's like being a doctor except your patients are cars and they don't talk back to you;)

I'm studying to be a mechanical engineer. The thing is, I'm not actually mechanically inclined. Its just that I enjoy the physics/math part of it. I've heard that trades are very lucrative right now (much moreso than engineering).

Mortician would be a good job... it would be better to deal with dead people than live ones. Being a writer would be a good job too. I have no job right now...I just lost my job(data entry--that's an okay job too as far as not having to deal with people much)....trying to decide whether I should try college or not........and what to do.....

Right now i'm studying Accountancy but don't have much confidence in my skills on the job as yet but i've only been studying it for a year. I've also studied Design and Computer Science. All are pretty much areas where there isn't a whole lot of contact with others but all are areas that i'm not that fussed about. I'm still trying to find an area that I really enjoy working in, which is of course the trick to not loathing the thought of getting out of bed each morning to go to work, it's hard enough for us anyway.
Computing in General though, is an area to think about. Once you have the skills and find a job then you are mostly just given intructions about a project, you go away for days/weeks and come back with it completed.

I did 8 years as a Civil Engineer, I had alot of contact with people, Meeting, etc. I loved the job hated the stress. It finally broke me and I went on 4 years of disability unable to leave the house at all. I took up weight training and became a personal trainer, I feel very comfortable in my new job and don't mind the interaction with people, I actually enjoy it for once because I really feel I am helping people.

i have never been able to keep a job because of SA, depression, and corollary low self-esteem. now i'm thinking about going back to school even though i don't like it because i can't think of any other way of surviving other than applying for social assistance.

Hi dzerklis,

I'm trying to break into editing and would appreciate any advice on getting established in the publishing industry. Any insight you could share?

Thanks,
Snowman

I tought about IT, which doesnt sound like it requires a lot of interactions. But I can't stand looking at a computer all day and would probably get really really short sighted, given my genes. I still don't know what i want to do. I spent three years studying something i hate.

I have spent many years not being able to do anything due to sa, agoraphobia and depression. Now I am for the best part over all of them, I can finally plan a future. I have decided to train as a counsellor. Will take three years hard slog, but am up for the challenge. :D

I also want to help other people that go through this stuff. The mind is so much more powerful than most people know. I hope to go to University in Sept. to study Psychology. But I keep telling myself that once I get my degree, I won't charge people nearly as much as most do. One of the main reasons why I haven't tried to get help is that most charge at least $100/session and that's insane. But I think a psychologist that has personal experience in these matters will be easier to talk to. A lot are just plain inconsiderate/rude.. or maybe I'm just too sensitive.

I say do whatever you are interested in.
Don't say, "Oh, i am going to do this because of SA". It's going to get you nowhere in life, mainly because you will be bored of the job and it will nopt help you get over your fears in any way.
I chose Communications.
It is a good choice i believe, because not only does it express my creativity and is something i have been interested in since i was two and saw the first episode of Barney, it is a good choice for SA. The interacting and working with people will help me get over the anxieties in a way...however slowly.

Hi

Just focus of doing on finding a career that you enjoy rather than something that wont aggrevate your SA.

Ask yourself what you'd really like to do, say if you didn't have SA and then ask yourself why you couldn't just pursue ideal career right now.

You should also keep in mind that you've plenty of time to decide what you want to do, I'm 21 now and only in my first year of college studying social science.

I used to be in the same spot as you and it seemed like forever for me to decide on what I really wanted to do and to be honest I don't think you can ever fully answer that question, because it's a big question that asks yourself, who you really are.

I think you should try to gain an understanding of what you'd like to accomplish with your life and what a certin type of work would mean to you.

People with SA don't have a set job type they go for, as you can see from the replies, interest's range from a Counsellor working closely with people to a Floor Installer working on their own. I'm steering myself towards a career in the political sphere, although as I said earlier, I can't fully know what I wan't to do or where I'll end up, all I know is that I have a vocation and a particular interest in politics. For me this could mean anything, a journalist, a politician, an activist, working for Amnesty International, working for a state department.

If you're anything like me, you should look to develop an area of interest rather than looking for a single specific job, but thats just my two cents on the matter.

Good luck!
