Joining a gym º

I want to become more and more of a 'yes man', in the sense that if someone has an idea to do something, I want to say yes and just do it instead of giving fear time to barge in and be a ****.

I've been wanting to join a gym for a while now, and there's one near my house that's got plenty of things I could do (ellyptical, cycling, pool, turkish bath, treadmills, etc). Obviously my main fear is judgment from others, either because my face will be red from the exercise, or because I'm out of shape. Rationally, I know this won't happen because usually people who see overweight people at the gym actually cheer them on and think 'good for him/her'. Besides, if I go during a certain time period, there's barely anyone there.

Have any of you joined a gym, and if so, how long did it take you to have the guts to do it, and what's your experience been like?

I actually just joined Planet Fitness like a week ago because they had a sign on special of $10. I've gone twice now and did this circuit training (which I regret now because I almost died each time) but no one was really paying me any attention. Also everyone else was wearing earbuds and in the zone when on the weights. I stayed on the side of the gym with the weight machines though, because all the elite gym goers were on the side with the free weights

People who exercise are often red in the face and sweat. This is normal and no one will notice.

I have joined a gym twice but I didn't like going, nothing to di wih my anxiety. Too many people for my liking. My training is running and I do some basic strengthening exercises at home.

You want to know how I got these scars?
I was heavily involved in the gym scene, was into fitness and natural bodybuilding for nearly 10 years. During that time I was a qualified fitness instructor and managed the health club for the owners.

I have seen all types of ppl in the gym and helped many different types of ppl achieve their goals. Looking back, some of those ppl I would definitely say had SA or similar. One thing I learned was to not focus on what others may or may not be thinking.
Go in with a 'get done what I need to do with focus' mindset.
A lot of ppl are concerned what everyone else is thinking of them in the gym. Some use that to motivate themselves, others let it conquer them and they stop going. Focus on WHY you are there and what you need to do.

Congrats on giving it a shot, great mindset!
I would advise doing some general fitness work before going, such as walking, jogging, push ups, sit ups, free standing squats etc. You can get it all online. That way you wont be so "green" (and end up quite sore!)when you hit the gym.

If you would ever like some general info or advice, I'm happy to help :)

You should do it. People are usually focused on themselves in the gym, so they don't really pay attention to anyone else.

I've gone to several gyms, as I've lived in a number of different places. Just do it. There's no reason not to.

I think it's worse for women than for men because women get hit on and flirted with by men sometimes. I've personally never seen someone flirt with someone else next to the weight rack but I imagine it happens.

Thanks for the comments!

I signed up today, and also started today. I was hoping to do whatever I wanted, but I got what I guess you'd call a physical and they made a workout plan for me (cardio, arms, legs, abs). I didn't really focus on the other people who were there because you could tell by looking at them that they genuinely didn't care, and were just getting their workout done. Everyone was friendly towards one another.

Plus I really needed to join a gym. My weight is starting to affect my back, not to mention my horrible sense of self-image.

I joined the gym two month ago and the results are incredible. I had to overcome my anxiety to go there, but now I actually enjoy it and it helps me get a clear head.

I'd have to spend thousands to get all those machines. Besides, joining a gym gives me more motivation to work out because the variety of options is awesome, plus it's now fully paid, so I have to go or it's a waste of money.
