Hi. I have oranges and pears growing in my garden. Actually maybe you could help me with something?

There is this strange, thick and woody vine strangling one of my trees, and I can't seem to get rid of it. It always comes back. I don't know much about plants, but this one don't have roots in the ground, it actually spreads from the middle top to bottom, also going for all the branches. One of the problems removing it is that this plant not only wrap itself around the tree but also dig into the wood in several places along the vines somehow, so when I try to tear it off it always damage the tree.

Maybe it's feeding off her since it has no roots in the ground? It really seems like a parasite when I think about it.

I can't go out often so is there a way I can kill it for good with stuff we find at home? :/

Any suggestions besides pulling them?

Gardening is great. I love growing things, taking care of things.

I have been too busy to grow any food since I moved into this new place that has two wonderful raised beds. I feel so guilty. Plus there is so much to learn. It feels overwhelming.

I am getting some goats in the next two weeks-super excited!! Maybe that is the answer to my weed problem....

Oranges and pears-wow Louco!

They are delicious. :)

I don't know if I take care of them properly though, I pretty much just keep the garden clean, and prune them a little if there's mold growing where the sun never reachs or when some branch gets too big and heavy, something that usually makes the tree look a little unhealthy when it's the case.

I feel guilty too. They have been here all my life and I feel like I ignore them most of the time...

That vine sounds awful! Is there an extension office of a university that might be able to help you identify it and hopefully get rid of it?

I know here in the states we have free services to help with such questions which is really nice. Some cases they will even come out to your house and assist you.

We have a huge weed problem on my property. I think I have 20 different varieties and they are all thriving. It is horrible.

I think we neglect our gardens we are neglecting ourselves too. Like it is a <euphemism> wrong word...cannot think of the right term... for the soul.

I try to work in the garden every day. It is good for me, and keep the place neat.

I am not good at plants. I can remember the most obscure stuff about tools but plant things just zip through my brain.

The weeds are doing fine.

Hmm I don't think so... :/

That sounds awesome.

Over here, well... Some time ago there was this giant tree right beside a neighboring house, and its roots expanded so much they eventually made their way to under the property. It eventually messed with the structure, so my neighbor called the city department which deal with this kind of thing. However, they not only did nothing to help, but also warned her that she couldn't kill or damage the tree, since the tree itself was outside her house and in public space, or she would pay a heavy fine. They promised to do something about it, but never came back. She had to move and sell the house for pennies, since the floor of one room was already visibly cracking and being pushed up.

The new neighbor killed the tree with gasoline and promised he will do the same to the mayor if they bother him for any reason.

This is kinda the brazilian public services in a nutshell, and how we have to deal with our problems if we expect to have a normal life.

That sounds... frightening. Maybe you should call someone to take care of them?

A metaphor? Analogy? :p

I totally agree with you on this kind of connection. My garden being in harmony with my life overall kinda feels right, instead of being a wonder, or ugly and neglected.

Maybe if we care for them better we start to feel better naturally too? :D

OMG that made me LOL though wow poor woman who lost her a** on that deal.
You must have such a different climate there with all of the humidity and moisture for plants to go crazy like here in the US down in the Southern states they have problems with viney plants taking over-there is no good hard frost to kill them and they are from Asia, so non-native and very invasive.
The rivers in my state have a Eurasian milfoil (don't quote me on the spelling) that is taking over the waters and choking out the native plants, which affects the fish/trout in our rivers.

Non native species of plants can be really aggressive.

I took a class once at a botany center when I was a teen about how "No Plants are Weeds" it is humans that make them into the enemy. That was an interesting class. I love plants and animals-nature. Can do no wrong in my book. :)

Oh God, i admire ppl who can take care of a garden, can't imagine all the effort and love put into it :)

Hope more people post on this place, i really enjoy reading it. Plus you guys/girls could post some pics of your gardens or the plants you're more proud of!

I think we neglect our gardens we are neglecting ourselves too. Like it is a <euphemism> wrong word...cannot think of the right term... for the soul.

I've always lived in a flat so no garden :( but my mother loved plants and made a lot of them grow, loved to watch her while taking care of them because it brought a lot of peace to me, so i know what you mean even if it is not a garden. I think something similar happens with animals.

Luoco, given that your vine has no roots in the ground suggests your plant may be one of the strangling trees or vines in the Genus Ficus. It's an adaption for competition for light in rainforest.

Gardening used to be my life when I was housebound. It was all I would think about - knew all the names of most plants and their growing conditions. Always wanted a cottage garden like in Beatrix Potter's books too. And I did but never lasted for long as my chickens would get in there - and the wild rabbits I would feed would build their burrows there.. then being in an exposed site and sandy soil and harsh climate would persist and I would start it all again. Many times I wanted to study horticulture in my youth but it meant traveling out of town and living away from home- something someone housebound couldn't cope with. But

Its a great therapy. We have large gum trees on our property that we grew from seed many years ago and planted out. Its amazing to think all those years ago doing that and the amount of birds and other animals that call it home.

hey:) i am so glad that so many is posting :)
i don't know what sort of plant you have that is on your trees but there are stuff you can try to kill it with:)
there are some chemicals out there you can buy that you rub on the leaf that will kill it. if you want to be more nature friendly you can try to strangle it by tying some cord of some kind, do that all over it and see if it kills it.
i am note a expert and i live in sweden so i just know most about plants that we have so i am sorry that i can't be more helpful.

hey, if the dandelions are in with other plants i userly pull them upp and trying to gett as much of the rot as posible. if its in between stons and bricks you kan poure boiling water or burn them a Little. the water in the plant will expand and break the cells. it will wither in a few Days. most importantly if you don't have time to gett them all you can go and pick the flowers and throw them in the trash so thay don't multiply. hopefully thay will be les and les in the years to come:)
everyone has weed and even if you do a perfekt jobb of weeding thay always come back so the best way you get rid of weed is to accept them and even like them:) (you can it dandellions for exemple)

Yes, I love gardening too. How come you haven't posted any pics, johan?

I currently have (that I can remember):

pears
limes
lemons
oranges
avocados
olives
grapes
loquats
chili peppers
parsley
rosemary
thyme
basil
oregano (2 varieties)
mint (2 varieties)
fennel
chives
lemon grass

I'd post a pic but photobucket seems to be screwing up right now.

You want to know how I got these scars?
I've always enjoyed gardening. My mum used to have a veggie patch and I would always plant my own veggies in my own patch right next to hers.
It's tough to grow things where I live... 2 weeks of 45 degree heat and it all gets fried...

But it's an activity that I find really enjoyable, soothing and generally good for ones mind :)
