Hello, everyone.
Longtime “lurker” and first time poster here. I've browsed this forum for a long time, but finally decided to join and connect with fellow hyperhidrosis sufferers.
A little about me:
I have suffered from hyperhidrosis of the hands, feet, and underarms since I was about 12. I'm now 22. As I got older, it spread to the groin, back of the legs, etc. The condition held me back socially all through high school and college. The physical discomfort and isolation led to anxiety and depression that I still struggle with today. For me, the sweat and anxiety act on one another to create a sort of vicious cycle.
So far, the only thing that has provided any relief is glycopyrrolate (Robinul/Avert). I discovered it in February 2013 and took it for about a year. It got me through college and kept me dry about 75% of the time, but the side effects were too much. For it to be effective, I had to take 6 milligrams early in the morning on an empty stomach. That dosage caused severe dry mouth, eyes, and nasal passages – along with sore throat and difficulty urinating. I also couldn't exercise during the day due to overheating.
At night, however, I would begin sweating “normally” and go exercise. I took up running and proper nutrition in hopes that a lower weight may stop the sweating. I've since lost 80 pounds and now weigh about 180, which is healthy considering my height (6'2"). But the dripping sweat remains.
Right now, I'm doing daily iontophoresis treatments with the Fischer MD1 I received towards the end of last year. Over the past several weeks, I've worked my way up to about 11 hours of total treatment time at 15 milliamperes. There are no results yet, which is very discouraging, but I'm going to keep going. Interestingly, after about 25 hours of total treatment time with a Drionic I used back in 2012, an area on the lower part of my hands went dry. That gives me hope that the Fischer may eventually work. I'm working on obtaining glycopyrrolate powder or liquid to add to the trays. My insurance did not approve the compounded ethanol solution.
(It did, however, approve Botox for the underarms and will hopefully for the hands. I'm waiting to hear back on that now.)
Anyway, I've written enough for one post. I'm hoping that I can receive some answers and advice from other people who understand how frustrating and debilitating this disorder is. I'll end with a few questions.
If iontophoresis was successful for you, how long did it take?
How deep is your water?
Have you tried adding anything to the water for better results?
God bless,
Chase Lindley
