Our Deepest Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Nelson Mandela, inauguration speech, 1994

Some more enlightening words, from a truly great man. If only there were more people like him.

Fantastic words.

Too bad it clashes with other views, like the old Asian virtue of humbleness, and my blatant atheism and belief of humans being intelligent and social animals playing by the same rules as the other creatures of earth.

My deepest fear is being slowly tortured for the rest of the my life. Like you know those chinese torture tools they used to use? Or electro-shocking. Like if someone was so good with these torture techniques that they could keep me alive for the rest of my life while keeping me in a room by myself and torturing me as long as they could, that's my biggest fear.

Can't agree with Nelson here, my deepest fear is that we die and that's it, nothing more. It would all seem pointless if that is how it is.
