Oxybutynin/Ditropan

Hi,

My dermatologist prescribed me 2.5mg oxybutynin to be taken twice a day. So far it has done nothing :( I've been taking it for around a week and I have no side effects or decreased sweating, it's like I'm not taking the pill at all.

How much can I take a day? I know some take 5mg twice a day, but that doesn't sound too promising

i've also had null effects with all oral medications. None have helped me with sweating at all....i only get all the unwanted side effects like brain fog, messed up cognition, and horribly unbearable dry mouth :(

I'm glad it worked for you, that's fantastic! I have a follow-up appointment soon, so will hopefully try a different medication :)

I've just been switched from Pro-Banthine to Ditropan. I'm taking 5mg once daily ( no specific time of day or with food etc given by doctor ) for week 1, 10mg for week 2 and up to 15mg for 3rd week onwards. I am only on my fourth day of taking.

I have to take Ditropan for its original use also and had to stop a drug called Vesicare I was on to allow me to try Ditropan.

I have not noted any significant change but I am experiencing side effects, mainly a spaced-out and listless feeling. It's possibly too early to say, I am basically on a months trial.

I am now taking Glycopyrrolate - when needed, 4mg in the morning (can take up to 5mg bd, but choose not to).

This has greatly improved my sweating and cannot recommend it enough!

TLB - Glad to hear of your success.

I'm guessing you ordered the Glycopyrrolate via Pharmacy.ca?

Was there any complications getting it to the UK. I've requested from doctor and dermatologist but hey say its not licensed/approved here.

How much do you reckon a years supply would cost you?

Hello everyone,

im in the same boat as you guys, but mine is sinking due to my constant sweating (sorry bad joke)

i have read about Glycopyrrolate and after being put on some useless drugs from my GP, i started to ask her for Glycopyrrolate. The GP had no idea what it was...and after a quick type on her computer she was very reluctant to prescribe it, I think mainly due to the fact that it is not the primary use of it. even though I'm positive it would help!!

(I am now with a new GP due to new location) how did you manage to get your GP to prescribe you Glycopyrrolate? i really doubt my new GP when i go to him/her, will consider this drug.

Sooooo any tips you can give? I have thought about buying from Pharmacy.ca (as i have seen on a few forums) but they only accept credit cards and I just graduated uni so don't have one :( :( and also sceptical of these online pharmacys.

great to hear it has worked for you! any advice on how to get Glycopyrrolate (or the less alternative oxybutynin) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

For me, it has been a long process. I visited several doctors ( overseveral years ) who at first prescribed the likes of Odaban, Driclor and Zeasorb. Each with little or no effect.

In the last 12-24 months I was referred to see a Dermatologist, who prescribed me Pro-Banthine pills. I took these for roughly 6 months with no great effects and considerable side effects.

I returned to my doctors enquiring again about Glycopyrrolate but have now been told twice that it wont be given in UK.

I am now on Ditropan (oxynbutninion ) at the suggestion of the dermatologist, 2 weeks in. Noticed no improvement yet but I am experiencing considerable side effects. I would say so far Ditropan has had more severe side effects than Pro-Banthine.

You may be best requesting for a specific medicine, I've often felt I have more knowledge on the subject than some of the doctors I have seen.

Or unfortunately you may have to play to play the long game or seek a different doctor.

Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer but this is what my experience has been.

What dose of Pro Banthine were you on out of interest?

I've been taking it for 10 months - I take 1 tablet 3 times a day and it has helped me considerably, but its great to know there are other medications out there.

I started on one tablet a day, and with supervision worked up to 3 tablets a day.

Actually, it wasn't from the Canadian Pharmacy!

Upon referral to the Dermatologist, she assured me that I can try each of the drugs until I find one which is successful. When I used Glycopyrrolate, I found that most effective with no side effects, so never tried Probanthine in the end. The problem I am having with Glycopyrrolate is that it costs ~£144 per packet (packet lasts about a week at 4mg/bd, so my GP is unhappy having to sign for a repeat prescription (due to NHS drug tariffs and allowances etc.)

However, I am moving to Belfast for 3 years in September, so I may either try to change to Probanthine (to lower costs, therefore more readily prescribed, as it is ~£0.50 per packet) or see if a surgery there is happy to prescribe Glycopyrrolate.

Sorry for the long message guys haha, I'm writing an essay for University, so I am in the mood to write copious amounts!

I was on 5mg, 3 times a day from the start. The irony is that one of the days before I switched to Ditropan, I had more success than usual.

I may well switch back to Pro.-Banthine, I'm sure the NHS hope I will too. I think Ditropan may be more effective but he side effects are more severe.

Thanks for replying. From all the anecdotal evidence you may be best staying on Glycopyrrolate.

I'm sure the cost reasons are why I am having no success when requesting it. I may in future buy some from the states to try it but we'll see.

JustG, i know the feeling...being put on various medications which you know wont work, but it seems to me that if you keep being persistent with your dermotologist/GP you will soon get Glycopyrrolate as there are not many other options (maybe mention this to them?) also maybe try and switch doctors as some might be a little more helpful than others. But it seems you have more experience with this than i do so who am i to give you advice, but hopefully you can get something out of this.. All the best mate.

TLB thanks for all the information you have provided!! and its great to see that you have found a solution and are trying to help others *hats off to you sir* But ye that is a lot of money! I am going to visit my new GP today...i hope he can prescribe me with one of these medications mentioned above, i will mention them to him and try and convince him and will let you guys know how it goes.

would you guys say that the dermatologists are more helpful (willing, able) than the GPs you have visited?

And TLB i knwo the feeling, after writting so many essays for uni everything you write you can turn into an essay haha :D

I was lucky to have a GP who was not knowledgeable but sympathetic.

The dermatologist had more specific knowledge and experience and at least gave me some other options (Pro-Banthine & Ditropan ). Unfortunately the elephant in the room ( glucopyrrolate ) is always present. I'm torn as I would really like to try it but also understand the cost implications to the NHS and I worry about the NHS's future.

Good luck with your visit.

Gosh I didn't even know you could GET a 5mg tablet. I take the 15mg tablet, so I'm on 45mg a day.

Your three doses were equal to my morning dose!

I'm just so thrilled to be dry. I never though it would happen. I kissed goodbye to any quality of life because of this stupid disorder. It's incredible to have my life back

I Visited the GP and was very surprised how relaxed/willing he was with giving me the prescriptions! I dont know whether it was what i said to him or his sympathy... but he prescibed me Ditropan (2.5mg) and Glycopyrrolate (1mg)! BUT he also showed me that Glycopyrrolate was not covered on the NHS (he even showed me this on his computer) but i still took both prescriptions

BUT I Went to the Pharmacy and the Glycopyrrolate was £117 (30 pills) so i have decided to try the ditropan for now as this is too expensive. Took my first 2.5mg last night and this morning can feel a bit dry lips/eyes/mouth, not going to comment on the effect on the sweating yet as its too early to tell (and have not been out yet), and from your guys experience 2.5mg may not be enough, but will slowly increase dose. I'll give an update soon when there is more to be said :)

TBL and JustG is the Glycopyrrolate prescribed by your dermatologist covered by the NHS? or do you have to pay for it all yourself?

CalamityJane - It's good to hear your is working. I had no idea the dosage could go so high. The impression I got from my GP was I could maybe go as high as 20mg throughout the day. I know sometimes on 5mg I tend to be quite spaced out. I could only imagine on 15mg. I am going to try variations of my 15mg at different times during the day.

nik4hh - Afraid I can't answer your question. My requests for Glyco have always been shot down.

Covered by the NHS, so £8.20 (I think it's that now) per prescription, not per packet. I think if they continue to decline the repeat prescription, I may have to change to pharmacy.ca but for the meantime I am okay!
