Oxybutynin/Ditropan

I thought I would update on my Ditropan experience. I am now on week 3, 3 x 5mg daily.

With my first dose of the day ( 1hr before eating ) I can feel as sensation of some dryness on hands and feet. Unfortunately any anxiety can quickly override this. The doses I take later have little effect. I don't know if this is due to the fact I eat quite regularly which might negate/lessen the effect.

Unfortunately I have experienced several side effects :

headaches, haziness and lethargy, dry eyes, trouble swallowing, shortness off breath*, tightness of chest*, heart palpitations, bloated feeling and feeling constipated.

* I may have picked up a chest infection over the weekend, explaining some symptoms ( others are definite Ditropan side effects ). I am bringing up phlegm which may also point to an infection. I am prone to cold/infections due to medicine taken for Rheumatoid Arthritis.

I am due to see my doctor Friday, so I will persist with Ditropan til then but I think it is most likely I will have to switch back to Pro-Banthine. Its the lesser of two evils. I would also like to try something other than Propranolol for combating the anxiety but we will see.

p.s TLB sorry for hijacking your post

Thanks for the info TBL im going to ask for a dermatology referral next time i go to GP as i cant afford to pay the ridiculous amount without it. JustG sorry to hear the bad side effects you have had with oxybutynin. Do you think Pro-Banthine reduced your sweating more or less?

Just an update on the oxybutynin that i'v been taking. works ok although i do still sweat. maybe 5mg before bed is not enough but it makes me drowsy/tired. Im now going to try and take 5mg in the morning, hopefully it will be more effective. Dry mouth/lip/eyes has not been a big problem for me.

To the people taking/taken oxybutynin did it make you very drowsy if taken during the day?

also does Glycopyrrolate make you drowsy/tired? (if so more or less than oxybutynin)

im thinking of buying Glycopyrrolate from pharmacy.ca (as it seems the only place to buy from and cheap!) but i dont have a credit card which is the only payment method :(

nik4hh - I have now been taken off Ditropan, apparently I was actually meant to be on Lyrinel XL ( slow release ) instead. I don't think I would have been able to stay on the Ditropan long term as the side effects were both too much and constant. In answer to your question I was drowsy for larges part of the day.

After a few days on Lyrinel XL, I have found fewer side effects but also the drug is less effective. I do at times feel drowsy and a little spaced out but the main issue I am experiencing is tightness of chest, heartburn or similar sensation and shortness of breath. I have found things such as exercise difficult since being on both varieties of the drug.

** Just an update. Today I found that on a slightly humid but not too warm morning, I found that I sweated a lot more all over. My feet were the worst area as usual. This led to increased anxiety. In comparison to Ditropan, Lyrinel XL appears to be considerably less effective.

I believe my chest issues, have are more likely due to an issue with Propranolol.

My doctor also took me off Cetirizine ( taken due to skin being dry/irritated ) as he stated this would increase the severity of the side effects of drugs such as Ditropan. Unfortunately off of Cetirizine I have found my skin is a lot more irritated. **

I think ultimately I will have to return to using Pro Banthine as it is the lesser of two evils but also less effective.

Unfortunately Glyco is an expensive alternative but one I will consider.

JustG I too now see that ditropan is not a good long term solution for me as well, due to the drowsiness/tired side effect i feel like it does change your personality as you have less energy and you can see how this would effect you...

JustG regarding your sweating more comment above, i found i got randomly hotter and sweatier when the propranolol was wearing of...it was a very weird sensation tbh (even though it kind of helped the first 2 or so hours when taken.) but havnt been on propranolol for a while.

Just a little information, I have just tried to order glycopyrrolate of pharmacy.ca but i used my debit card (which they say they usually do not accept) so im still waiting to see if it actually goes through. They seemed very professional and helpful over the phone. They said they will let me know so fingers crossed the transaction goes through! I'll keep you guys informed on the legitimacy of the site and everything.

I have been suffering from hyperhidrosis since ****rty hit so I can remember dealing with it as far back as Grade 5. I am 33 now and a sales rep so you can imagine how delightful it is shaking people's hands all day when they are a soggy mess. I have been so self conscious of my hyperhidrosis that I have tried topical treatments, ionphoresis machines and nothing seemed to work. I looked into the surgery a couple of years ago and again looked into it this year because I was fed up but reading all of the possible side effects and going under the knife in general scared me.

I decided to go to my doctor again (last year I tried a medication but it didn't make a difference). This time my doctor prescribed me: Oxybutynin Chloride starting with a low dose and eventually going up to 1 pill twice a day. I have been on this medication since May 2015 and living in a humid climate during the summer all I can say is WOW I have never had a summer like this where I don't think twice about shaking someone's hand or wearing cute shoes and clothes and not worrying about sliding out of my sandals or having big pit stains. This medication totally worked for me and it may not work for everyone but it is worth a try right? That's why I decided I needed to share this on this website because like a lot of you I trolled the internet looking for solutions to my sweating. I hope it works for at least a few of you out there. :)

I noticed some people have tried oxybutynin but ask for oxybutynin chloride it is used for people with incontinence issues because it "dries you out" so you don't have to pee as often that is one of the side effects so for me being a hyperhidrosis suffer the side effect works perfectly for my situation.

I've been on pro bathine for about a year. They are a god send if you ask me, the side effects and the fact you can't eat before taking them are draw backs but every little bit worth it so I would recommend trying them if you haven't already!

Just an update of my status on using Lyrinel XL.

I had great success for a period of 4/5 months. I'm sure this was largely down to the Lyrinel but can't guarantee this. I had a totally new lease of life and was doing things I hadn't done in years. I was also pushing myself quite hard at times to test out the effects.

Suddenly it has stopped working, there may have been warning signs but I did not notice.
** I have noticed in the last day or two, that my urine has returned to a more normal colour. I think this might be further indication that the side effect has worn off. My urine was previously considerably darker,**

I had been taking between 10-15mg first thing, then 5mg early evening. Now I am trying different times/dosages after a discussion with both my doctor and a pharmacist. Unfortunately, no joy.

I am also still using my Idromed 5, daily at the moment but cannot seem to crack it this time. I'm just hoping that as side effects wane, they can also reappear.

I have read elsewhere (on drug review sites) people talking of periods of years without sweating due taking Oxybutinin ( or one of the variations ).

So I'm back to the cycle of worrying, becoming more reclusive etc, ruining shoes etc, I'm sure most people know the score.

It is funny how I have more serious physical conditions but this is the most crippling and that's something I don't think non-sufferers would understand.

I guess just like Northern Soul, we just have to Keep the Faith!

I am on oxybutynin as well for my compensatory sweating. I take 10mg twice a day. It does help some but I still sweat like crazy at work or when I'm doing anything slightly physical. Has anyone tried the extended release version? Would that be better? This is an unbelievably hot humid summer and I'm at my wits end. I look like I've soiled myself. And my chest and back also soak through bad. They drip.

I also notice people saying they gave better results by taking it at bedtime. I find this odd because during the day I need to take my doses about 5-6 hours apart so I assumed it had a short life. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
