Panic attack?

on Sunday I believe I had a massive panic attack while in church of all places!

I was sitting there and all of the sudden felt faint, heart pounding, sudden lurching feeling like I was going down a steep hill and that I was losing control and fading away!

They took me outside and called an ambulance and at that point I couldn't even talk, I was trying to breathe and get back to normal again, but kept feeling like I was losing it or dying.

They took me to the hospital and ran all kinds of test on my heart and blood and said everything was normal. The on call doctor said it might be a panic attack and gave me some Xanax.

It most certainly calmed me down and I could talk and was almost normal again.

I left the hospital and he suggested I go see my family doctor and gave me a 3 day prescription for Xanax which I have been taking. Yesterday I was fine all day until a friend came over and I had another attack, not as bad, but had to go into the bathroom to escape.

Am I going crazy or do other people have this?????

You (most certainly, LOL) are not going crazy. Actually, one panic attac doesn't have to mean anything. Lots of people have it.

What do you think might be the cause? (Stress, maybe?)

Probably..

i think it's been building for sometime now.

But do these come and go though? It seems now, since Sunday, I've been getting little attacks everyday.

How do you overcome this?

Hi jcap,

Believe it or not, but church is actually one of the biggest places to have a panic attack. So you are certainly not alone. I think it has to do with your minds inability to feel like it can escape or get away (in church), so it can set the wheels of panic in motion.

You are not going crazy though. Everyone who has panic, feels like they are going crazy. Panic is very common, although can be very scary too.

Things should calm down alot soon enough. Its very common to have many subsequent panic attack right after the 1st one. The fear of the panic attack actually creates more panic, but it should stabalize a bit, especially with the medication.

The best advice I can give is try not to dwell too much on the fear of going crazy or fear of panic (easier said than done though). You wont go crazy nor will you die. Its just sensations.
