Physical characteristics

Does anyone remember having a certain physical characteristic that you were really insecure about that might have contributed to your SA? I think that may be true for me. Maybe not what entirely caused it but a good proportion of it. I may have BDD.

Also, since I'm unable to work right now, does anyone know of government assistance in the U.S.A. for independents? Websites or books? Anything? I need to talk to someone and receive meds.

Thanks:)

I use to have Acne for most of my teens. Luckily most of it's cleared up. It probably contributed but I guess SA/SP is more to do with mental issues.

my left ear is signifigantly smaller than my right.....

this is from being born with a lop ear , to fix it they had to cut the cartalige in it.. they did this when i was 5 so i basically have the left ear of a 5 year old...

I always assume people notice but i know its not true. not too long ago I had a couple of people that ive worked with standing around while i was talking to a friend about it and they all gathered round to see.. I normally would have been freaked out but i guess i was just glad that i wasnt being critisized about that all this time

I used to be fat...but I've had SA even since before then...cause I was a really skinny kid until I was about 8 years old and even before then I was really shy, quiet, & nervous around people...I'd cry every day when I had to go to school and be around those strange people. I wouldn't hardly talk to anyone. But then when I gained weight alot of people made fun of me so I'm sure that didn't help any. :x

I don't know about any extrenal features. But I was always kind of awkword. I was also diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age and I don't think that helped my SA or my self esteem. I used to get beat up alot and picked on cause I was so awkword.

I didn't had any physical characteristic that contributed to my SP.

I guess I might have a brain tumor that lead me to this

I had some physical features that increase my Social Phobia, at different of my life.
Middle and high school:
*30or more pounds overweight
*acne and acne scars

Today:
*badly thinning hair
*20 pounds overwieght

I believe I was born this disorder despite these physical. However, they made my S.P. twice as hypersenstive around others. :?

I've been shy my entire life, but during my teen years I got a pretty bad beating with the ugly stick. I had acne and my skin was terrible (its gotten better since then but still not good), I was pretty skinny, but there was something about me that I was unconcious of but I knew drew (negative) attention towards me. It wasnt until recently that I was made aware of what this problem is - my eyes. I have these hideous sunken eyes that can give people a bad impression immediately. For an example of the kind of eyes I am talking about, look at (I hope this isnt sacrelige, or offensive to anyone) Pope Benedicts eyes. I have those eyes, and dark skin, which just magnifies the situation. I feel like if I had less menacing eyes, I would feel more comfortable around other people, as I would know they wouldnt feel uncomfortable around me.

I got acne in the 4th grade - ironically by the time I had hit highschool it had cleared up, just when everyone else was getting it, but by then the damage to my self esteem was done.

but still, I think I had a predisposition for SA from birth, that just made it worse.

:( Crooked teeth, I wouldn't dare open my mouth to even smile or laugh in public until I was 17 and my braces came off.

i was born with sticking out ears (i know, very funny  to look at), which i think was the major contributor to my sp. i didn't really notice it up till grade 1 when the teasing started, so from then on i would always wear my hair down to cover them, and i'd walk with my head down so the wind wouldn't show them. then finally (thankyou god!) in year 8 i had an operation to have them taken back. so nowadays i look like a pretty normal person, but i still carry the shattered self esteem. :(

I had crooked teeth all through highschool and my mom couldnt afford to get me braces till I was 18! so now I have straight teeth but still have the braces, which im still self-conscience about because Im 19 and have braces! Also Im self-conscience about my big nose.

Crooked teeth - my parents could never afford braces

My teeth aren't white enough

My inability to smile - I think its a muscular problem as I just cant smile without looking like Bilbo the Clown

My height - Im way too short

My weight - Im very overweight

My hair - short or long its always messy and grows in weird directions

My eyes - I hate it when people look at them

My thumbs - both have wart scars on them

My chest - even if I wasnt overweight I still have moles on my back

My wrist - it has a scar

My face - 23 and still get acne.... hurrah for me

However I don't think these physical misfortunes contributed towards my getting socialphobia, but in fact it is the opposite. I think socialphobia acts as a magnifying glass, making all my imperfections glaringly obvious.

my teeth.
They're BIG and one of them is shaped like a spoon. When I was younger they were mottled too, although I had them filled with white filler...which has helped a bit.
I hate to smile as I think they frighten people. Have you ever seen Donnie Darko? I have teeth like the rabbit out of that film.

lets start with the...

I had big dumbo ears until I finally got surgy at 17 to get them pinned back ( I had long hair at the time and new I didn't have many years left with hair )- I know what you went thru " thereishope "

- got teased about them when I was a kid , not alot but enough !

- at 21 my hair started to fall out - so I did what I had to - I shaved my head completly bald - and I still do - I hate being bald but I refuse to wear a wig or anyother cover up besides a hat on days I don't feel very confident , which is more than not .

- I was skinny up unitil a few years ago - 6'-0 - 155 lbs ,
now I am 195 lbs -

 I have rabbit teeth too, two big front ones.

Has anyone else got raw ripped up lips from chewing them too much?

Or or, scars on their face from picking spots?

Wait wait wait, anyone got a pot belly whilst also simultanuously having their rib bones stick out?

<--is having a bad day.
