Oh yeah, I forgot: Margaret Atwood is going to be giving a talk in Cambridge in a few days. I'm attending to get credit for one of two mandatory cultural events we have to pick and attend in one of my classes. The event costs, but it's only $5 and I think that's more than worth it to go see such a great author in person! I've never read The Handmaid's Tale (or anything else of hers), but I've heard about how great a novel it is and I'm really looking forward to seeing Ms. Atwood I just wish I had someone to go with! Maybe I can find a classmate...

Edit: Ummm... never mind. The event is sold out As is the Stephen King one Not fair. I should have guessed. Lame, lame, laaaaaaame.

What Higher Education Should Be For | LinkedIn

I do agree that some liberal arts is required for the student to be more well-rounded as a person. One way to go about this is to make liberals arts courses a requirement for all degree plans, including sciences and engineering. Many colleges have a general core curriculum that all students must complete before they take courses in their major.

The professor mentioned that a 4-year liberal arts degree at Swarthmore is roughly $200K in sticker price. I gotta wonder, why go to Swartmore when you can take way cheaper classes at your local community college or local public university? What makes a liberal arts degree at Swarthmore much more valuable than a similar degree anywhere else? Sure, there could be smaller classes, better food, and more counseling support at Swarthmore, but I really don't think they're worth $200K combined, not to mention I don't need all the fancy dorm food or extra amenities that they're trying to sell. It's another business trying to market itself, or "differentiate" as they say.

I hate it when people think that being a strong person is one in the same as being a condescending and abrasive j-erk.

(Really? I can say ''*******'' but I can't say ''j-erk''?)

I'm almost compelled to find out exactly which words are not censored by this odd filter. But I'm pretty sure the mods would take it in poor taste if I post page upon page of 'technically allowed' swearwords. :B

What about cloaca? Birds and some marsupials might be offended.

With the balance of power held by Clive Palmer, now that is terrifying.

I hate ragweed allergies. It's only just beginning and I've already been feeling pretty cruddy the last few days. All day my throat has been swollen and it hurts to swallow and my ears have been itching. My eyes haven't itched as bad as a few days ago, but it seems like everything else is making up for it. I drank tea, but it didn't really help, just took away the itchiness. I've been eating a lot of warm foods and that hasn't been doing anything for me either. It's not like I go outside much, and I really try not to this time of year. I really didn't feel like breaking out the Claritin, but I guess I need to. Anyone else know of any nice remedies to tackle this?

So, today we had our weekly film evening. While I was still climbing the stairs to the friends flat, I already heard voices and laughter echoing through the staircase. It made me worry a bit on how crowded it would be today, that I already hear that many people.

The friend that owns the flat greeted me at the door. I went into the living room, and there were four more people sitting on the couch and one on a chair. So it was said buddy owning the flat, then his girlfriend living next door, then his longtime girlfriend, who is also my closest friend, then a superhot and intelligent way-out-of-my-league girl that I know since a couple of years. And then a couple I know from some board game evenings.

We normally sit on the couch, and when more people join than there is space, we drag a mattress in front of the couch for people to lie on. Since it was already a bit crowded on the couch, I asked whether they like it tight and cozy, or whether we'd need a mattress. So the hot girl then shouted that my best friend said that she needs me to cuddle with her since the hot girl alone wouldn't be enough to suffice my cuddleneeds. And that she thanked me for lending her some small plastic box for food, and that she brought it back today and also brought some cake along for me as thanks.

I was a bit surprised at all this direct cuddle stuff and so on... So I got a cup of tea and squeezed between the two, my close friend gently poking my cheek, saying that I'm wet (I've been biking to that place quite quickly), to which I replied asking her whether she's wet too. So she then just grabbed my hand.

We talked some more, some jokes, ordered food from the delivery service. The hot girl to my left (saying that sounds really degrading, she is a wonderful person and highly intelligent, but simply looks stunning too), complained a bit that later on some other guy will also join the movie evening. That he is weird and tried to date with her and so on. Of course it's always a bit odd to hear how many guys are after her... And when he did show up he didn't took a long time to make compliments on her. Though, compliments she really hated. Like "I like your dress. It looks good on your body. I like your body too."

So we kept watching the first movie. My close friend holding my hand, and the hot girl to my left. And I know she is in a monogamous relationship. But I also know she loves to cuddle. So I was tempted to put my left arm around her. But since she is in a relationship and didn't make the first move, and I didn't want to annoy her when she maybe just wants to watch the movie, I wasn't sure whether I should do it. But she seemed to be a bit in unrest. And I know that she is fine to cuddle with people she trusts without considering that to be a violation of her relationship. So I pondered back and forth, and finally thought "well, if you don't do it, you will regret it later on". Though I was also worried that she would somewhat push me back, saying something like "no I don't want that" and people looking at me in a strange way. But, I did it. And she snuggled a bit closer. My closest friend to my right asked me then whether that ain't a perfect evening for me.

So then our food arrived, and we were eating stuff, and later on she was leaning her head against my shoulder and so on...

At the end of the evening, she asked me whether I'd join her walking to the next subway station, which I normally always do, since it's on the way I take with my bike anyway. On the way there, she told me how she can't stand some people being near her. And often she doesn't know why. Sometimes the people do nothing wrong and she can't stand it. At other times, there are people at the video evening who also get too close to her for her taste. Like, that she moves a way a bit and they keep moving after her and so on. And that she doesn't want to make a fuss about it, though. I asked her, to make sure that she doesn't mean me, and she said something like "oh no, of course not" and gave me a long hug.

What a strange evening.

I will see most of the people on saturday, at the birthday party of my closest friend. And then on sunday again, some of them on our roleplaying game afternoon.
