I'm from Australia and I've always been curious about some of the weird words used to describe some cliques in American high schools. What is a Freshman, what is a sophomore and why do you further segregate yourselves by naming these groups?

Freshman - 1st year student
Sophmore - 2nd year student
Junior - 3rd year student
Senior - 4th year student

It has nothing to do with cliques, it's just a way of naming the grades.

I wonder where the word "Sophmore" comes from?

sophomore

soph·o·more [ sóffə mŕwr ] (plural soph·o·mores)

noun

1. second-year student: a second-year student in a high school or college

2. somebody in second year of something: somebody in the second year of a project or program

[Late 17th century. Alteration of earlier sophumer (probably influenced by Greek sophos “wise” + mōros “dull”), from obsolete English sophum “sophism,” a variant of sophism.] Wink
