A panic attack cannot cause heart failure or cardiac arrest
A panic attack will not cause you to stop breathing or suffocate
A panic attack cannot cause you to faint
You cannot "go crazy" from a panic attack
A panic attack cannot cause you to "Lose control of yourself"
A panic attack will not cause you to die
Panic attacks are exceedingly uncomfortable but not at all dangerous
You will suvive the panic attack and you will be okay

You can write these down if you like!

Yeah I disagree with some of your "reminders" too. A life full of panic attacks caused me to isolate myself from everything I ever dreamed of. They've caused me to completely rethink what there is left for me to get out of life, and what goals are reasonable enough for me to attempt to accomplish. I have basically become a slave to panic disorder and I've been agoraphobic for quite some time now. I don't know about you, but I would call that losing control...

Peace

Accepting the fact that I was made this way does not make me a slave to this disorder. Everyone is different, and I happen to have a ridiculous adrenaline problem that causes panic attacks during the slightest of social interactions. It's not my fault that I was made this way, but I'm not going to continue to fight this losing battle that no therapy or medication has been able to relieve. Therefore, I will follow my gut and do the things that I'm able and comfortable doing, for example, working from home as a medical transcriptionist, freeing me from the stress of a traditional job atmosphere and allowing me the energy to do the things that I want to do. By no means does that make me a slave, it just makes me different. If anything, continuing to fight the disorder makes me a slave to the prescriptions the psychiatrist gives me, as well as the so called "normal" people who want to force me into situations in which I will never be comfortable in. All I want at this point in treatment is to be independent and happy, and that's what I'm working toward. It's not as if I'm going to lock myself away like some hermit either, because there are tons of things I know I have to do that may make me uncomfortable in order to remain self-sufficient. I'm just tired of trying to fit this mold that people are trying to fit me into. I am my own person and I will do the things that I want to do, not what any doctor or anyone else tells me is normal. It's acceptance, not slavery, and as long as I'm happy who should really give a flying fuck.

Peace

Hi Silent type. I'm wondering, do you ever just take a minute when something is said and let it sink in? I have been reading along on this site and come across many of your postings. As well, you've responded to one of my own- much appreciated, btw. You seem like a really intelligent guy. Your responses are well-written, insightful and often times thought provoking. That being said, you also seem to always have an answer. Always. Cinn's message is simply to point out that during a panic attack- no matter how it may feel- you are going to be O.K. That's it. She is just pointing out that physically, you are not going to die. You may feel your heart pounding, you may feel as though a mini van parked on your chest, you may feel as though your head is going to start spinning around on its axis, however, you are not going to die. And (as I am sure you realize) she is referring to how you feel - as though your body is going to collapse into the fetal position at any given moment and you might forfeit reign over your bodily functions when in the clutches of an attack- when she speaks about losing control of yourself. She is not talking about how they may make us modify our behavior in such an extreme way that ultimately they do control our lives. Additionaly, in your effort to always have an answer you pretty much contradicted yourself - see below. Now, please do me a favor and do not respond to this right away. Wait for a few days.

Johnnyboy- I hear what your saying but I am not so sure. While I know this post is not to debate Silent type I have to say I think he is young and "knows it all". Cinn wanted to write an inspirational tidbit. Let it be that to someone on here. Why be confrontational on everything that is said? Take it for what it is and Shut Up already! Jeez! Rolling Eyes
