Yup interviews are the pits. The best way to get through them is to practice answering some interview questions. Google search typical interview questions and you'll get an idea of what to expect. Write down some points on paper on how you could answer these, then rehurse them orally by yourself, or if you have a friend available, ask them to practice this with you.

When they ask you about what qualifies you for this job, match the qualities given in the job description with yours and give examples. For example, for retail places like kmart and target, they usually require staff to be able to manage their priorities between say attending to a customer, cleaning up a mess on the floor, general merchandising etc. Use an example from your past to illustrate this. Eg, you could say that you're a busy person (even though it might not be true lol) and you manage to juggle school, extra-curricular activities like sports, etc etc.

I've been trying to get a job, too. I got laid off from my job at JCPenney over a year ago, and I haven't been able to get one since. I've only gotten three interviews so far and none of them have called me back. My most recent interview was at The Olive Garden. The person I talked to said he would call me to set up a second interview, but he never did. I called them (which is a miracle for me, because I hate telephones), and they said if I didn't hear from them by so-and-so, the position was filled or circumstances have changed.

I'm running out of options, now, seeing how I don't drive, meaning I don't have many places to look.

Partly why I'm trying extra hard is because I'm lonely and I need some human contact. I'm 22 (23 in March) and still a virgin, haven't dated or had a girlfriend, so I'm just so frustrated.

Having social anxiety just adds another level of difficulty with job interviews, but I've found that with all the job interviews that I've had, pretty much every applicant is nervous in one way or another, for obvious reasons other than social anxiety.

It's funny, but I think we can use this to our advantage. Being socially anxious, we are use to dealing with nervousness, and have used different coping mechanisms to deal with it. I think we could use this experience to shine in interviews, and land job opprotunities. Eg, I sleep deprive myself the night before the interview so I don't have the brainpower to be self-concious and nervous lol.

Yeah, I hate receiving such notices... I'd rather not hear back at all from potential employers who aren't interested anyway.

Sorry you didn't get the job.

Depressed4life- May I suggest you take this opportunity to apply, schedule and go on every interview you can. It takes practice! Everyone who goes on an interview is nervous. Everyone! I've learned there are basically 3 types of interview-ers. The 1st is the guy who has no idea how to conduct an interview. He asks you only a few questions, does most of the talking and then says "Do you have any questions?" The 2nd is the guy who has a list of questions he is supposed to ask. He asks them but he has no idea what is a "good" answer from you and what is a "poor" answer. Then there is the 3rd type. This guy knows what questions to ask and he is looking for certain responses from you. Responses that show you meet the qualifications the job requires. You prepare yourself to have an interview with the 3rd type of person and hope you'll get the 1st type! To prepare, do your research!! Whether you're applying to scrub toilets or be the CEO of a multi-million dollar company, do your research. Look the company up online. Write down a few key points to mention in the interview. Like when they first opened their doors, how many employees they have, what their sales were last year... whatever you can find that's interesting. This will show the interviewer that you took time to prepare yourself and are taking the interview and possible job opportunity seriously. Then practice, practice, practice! Seriously, if you are prepared before you go into the interview you will feel much, much more confident during it. I went on 10 interviews before I got my most recent job. It was my first time really interviewing and at first I sucked! I have horror stories about interviewing! On one, I started getting red in the face and it got so bad the interviewer thought I was choking! I kid you not! He stopped in the middle of his question and said "Are you all right? Do you need some water?" Embarassed But I got better because I kept working to prepare myself and I went on every interview I could get- even if I wasn't really interested in the job. Definitely look up interview questions online and write your answers out. This helped me a ton! Many interviewers today like to ask questions where you have to give an example. "Tell me about a time when...?" These questions are tough unless you have written out some possible responses before hand. You can do it! Prepare, prepare, prepare, and then prepare some more!

I have been trying to get a job for about a year now too, the last job I was at for 6 yrs so I felt comfortable there. But thinking about it makes me ugh, having to deal with new people which I don't know I don't know just scares the hell out of me. But I figured the best way to get over your fears is to take them head on, which doesn't sound easy at all. Even when I get an interview I'm soo nervous, that I won't know what to say or that I'm not good enough for the job. My hands get shaky and ugh, they probably think I'm nuts.
