I've read that after several unsuccessful attempts with antidepressant medications that doctors have prescribed stimulants, such as adderall or ritalin, to treat depression. I've also heard of it being used to combat amotivation and lack of interest caused by benzodiazepines. Depression usually goes hand in hand with anxiety disorders, and I was just wondering if anybody here has been prescribed stimulants as a "last resort" for helping their depression or to combat side effects of benzos.
Before you dismiss the possible benefits of these medications on anxiety disorders, just think about it. Why is the first line of treatment for patients like us sedation? I've read that it's perfectly safe to take stimulants along with benzos, so if you're thinking the upper/downer combo isn't good, I've already researched that. If we were given drugs that made us more talkative, happy, and focused, wouldn't that be more productive?
Haha I don't want you to think I'm a speed freak or anything, either, because I've just been reading up on all the alternatives out there, and this is one of them. Any experiences?
Stimulants have there ups and downs just like anything else...
Ritalin is some of the worst shit on the planet and will probably make u more depressed.
Dexamphetamine is a much better alternative as it gives u all the good qualities of a stimulant without the depression.
However, I find stimulants (which i used to take 4 ADHD) extremeley addictive or at least habit forming.
They work a little too well. But I must say I absoloutly love the shit... you can do anything on dex and all ur worries get chucked out the window.
Be careful with them though as if ur not you'll have teeth like mine.
methylphenidate is best thing in planet man. i snorted that short for months, then quit because i thought i would become addict lol. ritalin is only drug(not abusing it) that gave me motivation and become productive. i think im just an unmotivated person so it helped a ton! even with depression because it realeses dopamine.
Thanks for the replies guys I'm definitely gonna discuss this with my psychiatrist next time around. It seems like I've tried every antidepressant under the sun and I need a way to shake this depression that's secondary to my panic disorder. It seems like a nice boost out the door every morning might be the answer.
It's weird how these medications have the paradoxical effect on add/adhd patients who would seem to need no speed, but these medicines seem to do wonders in calming them down. Maybe I have a similar problem in my brain chemistry and this stuff will have the same effect on me by focusing my racing thoughts and allowing me to actually speak normally in social situations instead of having my mind go blank all the time. Anything is worth a shot at this point.
Sponglewang,
How would these medications fuck your teeth up? Did they lead you to getting hooked on meth or something? If so, sorry you got involved with that shit. I live in a county in Pennsylvania that was termed by Newsweek magazine as "meth valley," so I've definitely seen the type of tooth damage you're talkin about. I never tried the stuff though, or even seen it for that matter. Prolly cuz I "don't meth with meth."

I take adderall for adhd and it does seem to work for me but only on focusing, not really anything there for socializing. Although, when I did take too many stimulants it actually did make me feel a lot more comfortable around poeple and able to talk more, but it made me way too obsessive and I kept repeating things. But yes I do bet that for some people it would actually work.
Awesome hopefully my pdoc will allow me to find out if I'm one of those people it works for. Not a long term thing but just so I know what it's like to really get out there and have a real social life again... I don't know what the fuck happened. And no I started smoking pot because of this issue (which I'm not saying is the answer but it relives stress whether u people would like to agmit it or not)
I've noticed that if I take an over-the-counter diet pill my mood and my brain are better. I don't feel as down and my thinking seems more clear. But, I don't always even realize I am "down" until I've taken a diet pill and realize I'm not. I don't know... weird.
