If it's the operation I'm thinking of, I was supposed to have that done about 11 years ago, but I discovered I was pregnant with my 2nd child, so couldn't proceed. By all accounts, surgeons now consider the op you had as old hat!!!! You know how it is, things move on - sadly not always for the better.

The surgeon I saw did tell me about a trial happening in Russia at the moment. I think someone has mentioned it on this forum already. It's the lyposuction one. He told me it could be available in the UK within a couple of years, so fingers crossed, there may be a chink of light at the end of the tunnel.

Toni x

Hi just wondering if anyone taped this programme? I really wanted to watch it as have been suffering with excessive sweating for years. BUT I forgot and was out so unfortunately missed it. If anyone has taped it i'd be happy to refund any postage costs if you could send it to me? Thanks.

I watched Hidden Lives tonight totally by chance and felt so sorry for those women, when I was younger in my 20's and early 30's I had the most dreadful underarm sweating just like the lady in the programme,I finally got rid of it with a preparation called Anhydrol Forte ..... I would recommend this 100% ..... I have not suffered one single day of sweaty wet armpits for many years and it's thanks to this stuff,it can be purchased Online .... any questions regarding this product feel free to ask me my Email is issy_566@hotmail.com
Good Luck everyone x

I've just watched the programme and was shocked to see that toni was not offered any surgery. I'm 24 and had surgery 6 months ago for the same problem. I was on the waiting list for the operation for 2 years and because of the waiting time, my operation was done privately through BUPA (I didn't have to pay). When I met my surgeon he offered me at least 3 kinds of surgery (ETS wasn't one of them) and I got to have my pick. The surgery wasn't without complications but definitely worth it. Those who suffer from it should persevere as there is definitely more than one kind of surgery available and it's available now.

ETS should never be performed for underarm sweating in any case.

Hey haggis would you mind giving some more info on the surgery you had if you don't mind me asking.

What were the 3 types you were offered if you can still remember ?
What kind did you go for ?
When you say you didn't have to pay what do you mean (like did some kind of insurance pay for it, or someone else or got nhs to pay or something ?)
do you know how much the cost would have been ?
what were the complications you mention ?
how is your sweating now ?

many thanks in advance been looking into/thinking about alot recently so great to have some more info from someone whos had done (and through bupa who Ive been looking at)

I can't remember the name of my operation but I can explain it for you. I had an incision made under each arm, the skin was peeled down and the sweat gland nerve endings were scraped away and removed. The other operations I was offered was the complete removal of the sweat gland which would have required extensive surgery or liposuction. I was on the NHS waiting when I was given my date for surgery. It wasn't until I got to the hospital that I realised it was getting done through BUPA. I wasn't told before hand but afterwards they said that because of the waiting period for the surgery, a lot of the operations were being done free through BUPA. Unfortunately I don't know the price for the surgery. After the surgery I was told that the dressings would only be on for 2 weeks max, I, unfortunately, had 9 infections in each arm. Because of this, my dressings stayed on for 6 months and I had to attend the doctors every day to have my wound cleaned and re-dressed. My left arm eventually healed after 5 months but I was left with a large open wound under my right arm. I was referred to a skin specialist for a skin graft but thankfully my wound is now starting to close. If you had asked me 5 months ago if I recommend the surgery I would have said no...but after watching the programme I remembered what it was like to have hyperhidrosis and now I would certainly recommend it. I may have had a lot of complications but my arm will eventually heal...hyperhidrosis won't. The nerve endings will grow back under my arms and I will start to sweat again but it will be nowhere near as extreme as it was before. You do also compensate elsewhere but again, this is not as bad as what you're probably going through. I tried every available 'fix' for this problem including anhydrol forte, ientophoresis and botox...the operation is the only way to stop it. I hope this answers all your questions...feel free to email me on vmcneice@hotmail.com if you need anymore help.
