Firstly, I am posting to this website because my phobia is very unusual and I have been told it may be an off-shoot of the social phobia. My mother suffered from social phobia so perhaps there is something in this?
I am trying by whatever means to try and contact anyone who has this unusual phobia of holes. If you have it you will immediately understand what it is and if you don't, you won't understand at all. Please email me if you have this or know anyone who does. Also, I have set up a website specifically about this phobia at http://www.geocities.com/holephobia
Thank you - Louise

I do not see how this phobia is a shoot off from SP. Most people have a phobia of sorts and yours just happens to be holes. Its more common than you think actually. Hope you find the advice your looking for.

Thanks for your reply. I'm just trying to find out as much as possible because the phobia is very specific, not just holes in general. From my research there doesn't actually appear to be a name for it either. The problem is that its not where I just say, oh I don't like this - I have a physical reaction to certain types of holes and it can be quite debilatating. Anyway, thanks and I'll keep looking around for information.

I reckon that there would be a name for it somewhere on this site;
http://www.phobialist.com/
because there appears to be a anme for anything imaginable listed there.

Hi. I had never heard of your phobia before until now. I looked at that phobia list site and saw some really unusual phobias listed.
Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.
Anglophobia- Fear of England or English culture, etc.
Barophobia- Fear of gravity
Dikephobia- Fear of justice.
Do you think some people out there in the world actually have those phobias to a severe degree?
If you have a fear of gravity you're pretty much snookered, unless you go on lots of space missions to escape it.
I wish I was afraid of something like the peanut butter one instead of social situations.

Yeah, there are phobias for just about everything. Some of my favourites;
Pteronophobia- Fear of being tickled by feathers.
Triskaidekaphobia- Fear of the number 13.
Politicophobia- Fear or abnormal dislike of politicians.
Levophobia- Fear of things to the left side of the body.
Lachanophobia- Fear of vegetables.
Kosmikophobia- Fear of cosmic phenomenon.
Helminthophobia- Fear of being infested with worms.
Defecaloesiophobia- Fear of painful bowels movements.
Bogyphobia- Fear of bogeys or the bogeyman.
Bolshephobia- Fear of Bolsheviks.
Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing.
Pentheraphobia- Fear of mother-in-law. (Novercaphobia)
Phobophobia- Fear of phobias.
Panophobia or Pantophobia- Fear of everything.
and my personal favourite....
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia- Fear of long words.

I'm glad that my suffering brings so much mirth! ( rofl)
Anyway, with all this various talk about obscure phobias - does anyone know how a phobia gets given a name? Is there an official body, like a Society for the Giving of Phobias' Names??? Seriously, does anyone know how a phobia gets an official name that would be recognised?
If not, don't worry, my research continues anyway!

Thats a good question. I would suspect that it is simply the case of someone in the medical fraternity coming across an abnormal fear and just putting a name to it, maybe including it in a paper of some sort, but that's just speculation.

Much like you, I also suffer from the extremely weird phobia of holes. Many people think I'm making this whole thing up about bein afraid of holes, but it all started when I was six and I saw this discovery channel thing on how this frog laid eggs in it's mate's back, and then when the tadpoles hatched, it left tons of holes in it's back. Ever since I have been creeped out entirely by holes! Even thinking about them makes me want to crawl in the corner and hide! my skin gets all itchy, my heart races, and I sweat like none other!!!
Anyway...the name for the phobia is trypophobia. There are actually quite a few people with the phobia, but most of them are girls.

oh my god, this freaked me out, I thought it was just a weird thing I had, but I have been freaked out my holes all my life, not holes like you dig in the ground but a set of closely knit holes (oh my skin crawls just thinking about it) but they have to be deeper than like 5mm too freak me out (gettign weirder by the second), its lucky that you don't often see what I'm talking about too often (thank god)....wow
If I do see them I get this urge to fill them in, like I had 5 holes that were tiny but close together on my wall and I filled them in with 'paste' so I couldnt see them.
*hangs head in shame....I am too weird*
