This alerts us to possible existence of danger.
It causes us to immediately shift our attention and become vigilant.We must find out what is going on and we seek out what the potential threat might be. This makes it hard to comcentrate on regular functions.

OUr available memory becomes reduced and all attention goes into seeking out the danger.We find it very difficult to comcentrate.
At times, we can't locate the threat and that is often diffcult to accept. We feel scared but can't find anything goin on outside to be scared of. Then we turn the search inward. When we can't figure out then we say I must be going crazy I must be dying These statements that we lead ourselves tinto are absolutely not true!
