A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Tolle

Book Description
The highly anticipated follow-up to the 2,000,000 copy bestselling inspirational book, The Power of Now

With his bestselling spiritual guide The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle inspired millions of readers to discover the freedom and joy of a life lived "in the now." In A New Earth, Tolle expands on these powerful ideas to show how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world. Tolle describes how our attachment to the ego creates the dysfunction that leads to anger, jealousy, and unhappiness, and shows readers how to awaken to a new state of consciousness and follow the path to a truly fulfilling existence.

The Power of Now was a question-and-answer handbook. A New Earth has been written as a traditional narrative, offering anecdotes and philosophies in a way that is accessible to all. Illuminating, enlightening, and uplifting, A New Earth is a profoundly spiritual manifesto for a better way of life—and for building a better world.

About the Author

ECKHART TOLLE is a contemporary spiritual teacher who is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition. In his writing and seminars, he conveys a simple yet profound message with the timeless and uncomplicated clarity of the ancient spiritual masters: There is a way out of suffering and into peace. Eckhart travels extensively, taking his teachings throughout the world.

This book is really cool. It explains the damn voice in our heads isn't really us, it's our egos run amok.

No voice in our head isn't US. A voice in our head can easily be a part of us, but can reflect a part of ourselves that we maybe arent too happy with, or wish to change.

Judging by the comment at the bottom, this book sounds more harmful than helpful beause it appears to "teach" you to not trust the voice in your head (your intuition, maybe?) and at its worst could forseeably ruin the relationship that you should have with yourself....

But I actually read this guys previous book, "The Power of now" and what it told me to do was to "quiet" the voices and thoughts in my head in a way which to me felt like making myself more of a zombie than a human being. I felt really uncomfortable with it, and it subtracts the humanity from you, the human by attempting to shut off the ego, which is the primary apparatus with which you expore, experience, and enjoy the world with.

I think the methods proposed in that book are an awful way to enrich your life, and cater to people in the same way that drugs an alcohol do to those who want to escape reality. But hey, I guess it works for some people.

I can't imagine this book being too different.

I listened to the audiobook of this awhile back and it's helped me quite a bit. I dont try to quiet the voice in my head though. I remember him saying that what you resist persists, and what you fight strengthens, so trying to make the voice go away doesn't work.. when I'm in a situation where I'm feeling bad I just kinda sit back and listen to myself thinking and just go with the flow and feel myself feeling that way, and that makes it gradually fade away the next time I feel that way about something. Not sure how else to explain it, lol.. but after reading this I feel like I've taken a load off my shoulders, or a load off my mind.. and I feel a lot less anxious and more at peace with myself than I use to be.. so i do like this book a lot. (:

Intresting book I thing I ll have to take a look at it. I ve alwayse wanted to know what to do with the internal self chatter.

Ignoring it doesnt work but listening to it is also a drain cause it's usualy un trust worthy. Most of the time it just full of negativities. Its like haveing a friend who is constantly underminding ever idea you come up with.

I read it a while back. The part i remember the most is where the author is recouting a story about consoling a fairly traumatised woman and he encourages her to be accept her situateion rather than saying 'why me?' and thinking of ways to get out of it and generally being totally frustrated by it. She reluctantly agrees to try and just accept the pain rather than fight against it and she says through doing this a weight had been lifted off her shoulders or something like that. So she still had the pain of her experience to live with but had kind of removed another layer of pain which came from frustration and not accepting her situation. But it made me think about my own situation with SA in a similar way.
