I recently found out that I had Avoidant Personality Disorder. I only have it very mildly when around comfortable situations, but when in new situations and especially when in groups, it becomes very hard on me.

I'm going to college now, and commuting about 1 hour one-way (by train), and I have remained totally introverted and withdrawn. It's even worse, considering that all of my old friends have moved elsewhere, I'm constantly in large, very impersonal lecture halls, and nobody in college will randomly start talking with you. I have to take all the initiative, now, which is extremely difficult since I'm very (unnecessarily) self conscious and shy.

What is your advice on my situation? I really want to meet a few people that I can stay long-term friends with. Just keep in mind that living in a dorm isn't an option (for monetary reasons and because I'd be too homesick).[/u]

I went to uni in 2006-07 and had the same situation. I commuted instead of living away which is bad, because everyone knows each other from living there. But the uni was close by, and there's money. Hardly anyone started talking to me apart from one guy, but I was really quiet and withdrawn in uni so i feel bad because he made the effort. No one else did. There was so many people but no one to talk to which is ironic.

All I can suggest is join some of the clubs and societies on offer. If the situation is right try and make a little conversation with people in lectures. I know that's near to impossible though most of the time.. well it felt like that when everyone else was sat in their groups.
