do you think the UK is a miserable place?

Where I live outside the Manchester area is pretty miserable anyway. There are nice people particularly older ones who've lived in the area for a long time, but I feel all over there's cold, maybe even slightly aggressive people. You get the feeling people only care about themselves. The Manchester area itself is a dump I can't wait to leave. Dark, dirty, and quite intimidating. Other areas like the south west seem a lot nicer but I only visited there on breaks. Similar story anywhere else?

Yeah city areas here are generally miserable and hostile, there's no sense of community or anything and you don't know who to trust. I think living in one of the scariest and busiest cities in the world only aggravates my social anxiety. I mean, you can't travel a short distance on the tube without feeling wary and getting icy looks from others. To be honest, London does absolutely nothing for me, it sucks the life out of me..there are so many beautiful places on earth where I'm sure I'd be a lot happier

I think Manchester's OK meself, though I'm from Trafford and its abit more rural, why not go days out to hadfeild, edale or buxton on the train, those are nice places to escape the monotony if city life

yea sometimes, but I dunno, I think I'm pretty proud of Britain actually. I think there are lots of really cool great people around. I think there's a lot worse places in the world we could live.

and the miserable thing, that is true, there are a lot of moaners in England, but I find it kinda funny now....it's like tradition or something! Like that Grumpy Old men programme...I can't wait to be a grumpy old man when I'm older! I'm quite proud that British people aren't the kind that pretend to be happy when they're not. I'm glad that it's ok to be miserable in this country. It takes the pressure off from trying to be fake happy all day long.

On a day like today... I really hate it here. It has been wet, grey and dark all day ))): I got soaked, and it put me offf going out even more.

Most people here are ok, but i find that in towns and cities people tend to be more aggressive and rude.

I don't know. There's lost of things wrong with the UK - i could stay up all night listing them. But there's lots of lovely things about Britain, too. I was fortunate enough to be brought up in the countryside, involved with a bit of farming, rural sort of persuits (and disputes), which was all quite quaint and nice. The cities are pretty dreadful, though. But, i don't know - England is my home, and though it has it's faults, i wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world. Even if, say, civil war broke out tomorrow morning, i still wouldn't have the heart to leave England.

I don't know about the whole grass is greener thing; I think there are bad people and good people here as there are anywhere. I technically live in a town and I would imagine it gets worse in the cities. The nearby rural areas are noticeably friendlier. It's always amused me how you step foot on countryside and strangers start saying "hello" as they pass. I suppose I like it here although I do sometimes find myself wishing '28 Days Later' would actually happen.

It all depends on your perspective on life. The more stressed, depressed and fearful you are the greater your chance of seeing people and places as being unfriendly. However, I do feel that British people can be very reserved and sometimes come across as unfriendly. For instance, this morning I was walking my dog and passed a woman in the street and smiled at her but she never smiled back or acknowledged me and I thought to myself "Miserable sod!!!".
