Propantheline bromide in the UK?

Hey all

I went to my doctor again yesterday to get another prescription for propantheline which he gave me, but as he was adding it as a repeat prescription for me it came up with a notice to say the UK had problem with manufacturing and there's a shortage in supply?!?

I have googled it and it appears the same thing happened last year, I'm hoping it was referring to that and it was an old message... My chemist has to order propantheline in for me but it comes in the very same day - has anybody had any problems getting hold of it?

I need to pick up my prescription from chemist on Monday but I think they had in stock.

I hope there's not going to be another manufacturer problem like last year as that was annoying

There was indeed a shortage last year for about 6 months. I suggest you advise your GP to give you a larger prescription, and then visit several pharmacies to get it filled.

Sorry to jump in, but how do you guys find it works? Does it leave you completely dry?

I'm a bit nervous about going to my doctor and him just saying there's nothing he can do or being endlessly referred but if I have something to ask for it might be a better experience.

(I did search but most experiences are from 2+ years ago, so just wanted some more up to date experiences, thanks!)

I took propantheline for many years, and it was effective on an empty stomach (at least 45 min before taking food).

However, low doses were not too effective, and higher doses had side effects (very dry mouth, to the point of chocking).

The drug effects were typically wearing off after 6-8 hours.

I am now using glycopyrrolate (same as Robinul/Avert), which was a pain to get a prescription for in the UK, but now available from the UK as opposed to being imported. A much better product, in term on lasting the full day, with fewer side effects, and sometimes even to the next day. However, I need to take it at least 2 hours before eating, so no more breakfasts in the morning.

Thanks for the reply. I had heard that Avert was better from someone else, I will definitely look into it, thank you!

It's available in the UK now? What manufacturer?

Yes, manufactured in the UK now by NuPharm Laboratories. However, probably only available with a prescription (either from NHS hospital or maybe private).

Thanks. I have an appointment with a dermatologist in September, so I'll check this out and inform them.
