Hi,
I'm keen to try propranolol.
I've been suffering from SP for about 18 years and feel those years have been wasted, I'm willing to try it if its going to help.
Where abouts do you get it from ? (The Doctors is out of the question!!)

Dave

Forgot to mention I live in the UK.

Propranolol

Hi there you get it from your docs, they will prescribe it for you if your sympthoms and health allow. I am only prescribed 20mg twice a day which i dont think fo someone that has suffered SP for over 7 years is enough... i advise you try it though got to be worth a go

hi there! Well i have been back to the doctors and told im that ididnt think 20mg was enough and he has prescribed 40mg a day. I have to say i have beeninthe feared situations and i cant seem to get my heart ponding or get nervous to the point of walking off!!! Obviously some of the is there but when the pounding isnt- it stops the other usual symptoms arising!
You have to also put yourself out there using these too, they dont just work or cure you.
I am notone to bull***t anyone asi have suffered SA for years and so really really recommend you guys try this drug as it is non addictive, my nurse who once supplied it uses it on occasion. You can use it daily or just when your about to go into a feared situation. No side effects really ..maybe feeling a little tired but hell it beats the fear feelings i have lived with for so long.
I cant explainexactly what it does to you but i suppose it numbs the fear.
hope this helps x

yea it works, my mom is a doctor and she prescribed it for me. I had a presentation in class, and usually I am very afraid to stand in front of the class. My mind goes blank, I start turning red, my mouth goes dry, my palms are very sweaty. I took it before a presentation in my english class and it really works. I was actually standing in front of the class not worrying at all, just looking at everyone and my thoughts were really clear. The only thing is if you are not a talkative person it will not make you more social or make you become more talkative. If you are quiet you will stay quiet but at least won't be nervous about it.

Hi there! This is my first post and thought this would be relevent as i was prescribed beta-blockers (propranolol) for my anxiety. I've always been a fairly shy guy but anxiety symptoms only started about a year ago. I can usually interact with people ok but my biggest problem has been that since i first got anxiety symptoms (fast heart rate, sweating, blushing) the thing that keeps them coming back is the fear that it will happen again in these situations, and i can never tell when it will happen!

Anyway i find that 20mg about an hour before a stressful event is quite helpful. Keep in mind these are not prescribed for the mind but for the body. But i find it prevents my physical symptoms and because it is fear of these physical symptoms and people noticing them that make my mind stressed and anxious, it also helps my mind. So i think that if your main anxiety is the fear of anxiety symptoms and people seeing that you're anxious, these are good. It by no means fixes the underlying problems (which i'm sure me and everyone has to try and deal with in their own way), but the fact that it lets me function in these situations and makes me realise i can deal with them gives me confidence to face them next time. These drugs are extremely safe (for most people), not addictive, and i haven't experienced any side effects at all. It sucks that once the mind gets anxious in a particular situation and triggers an anxiety response then it knows to do it the next time. Then you worry and it triggers it again. A self-perpetuating, cruel cycle.

Hope this helps anyone who reads this.

I have been taking these tablets for about 2 yrs now. I take 80mg a day & to be honest wish I didn't. Yes they do make my anxiety feel better but I have no energy, my blood pressure drops when I stand up so I go very dizzy & have on a couple of occasions been near to passing out while out shopping. I can also hear a whooshing noise on standing.
My GP has tried to lower the does but it sets my heart racing even if I am not having an anxiety attack.
I really wish I had been given a lower dose in the beginning then maybe I would feel better.

I have been using Proprananol for over 5 years now and have to say it does work when you take it.

I have had no side affects whilst I have been taking it and continued fitness training throughout the full time and it actually helped my performance as I could do longer sets.

I felt cured of my social phobia so i stopped taking the tablets for about 1 year and after a series of highly stressful situations I got worse, now I am unable to go to my doctors as I am afraid which sounds stupid but I know when I go and get the tablets then I will be back to my normal self.

I think if I had of taken Behaviour therapy along with the Proprananol then I would be in a better state now I would say.

What was your effective dosage amount? And did you take it "as needed" or daily?

Hello

I was prescribed the extended release version of propranolol, does anyone know if this acts differently? Thanks.

you take a shot and its got a longer half life i imagine, more convenient.

Im amazed at all the positives, sure it eludes physical symptoms of anxiety stress but its not all that good without CBT in the long run IMO. I dont show symptoms of stress but theyre there because my temples and forehead goes numb if ive had a bad episode, and additionally i have less apathy for anything.

I fail to believe that anybody on 10mg a day can see huge benefits, they must have extremely mild anxiety and gone to the doctors very early, i say well done though i guess.

I have been taking it for 2 weeks it worked for 2 days then stopped. But im only taking 10 mg a day. A Secret, Also if you want it to work better and faster put it under your tongue and it will dissolve, taste kind of nasty but not that bad just wash it down with water.

Propranolol is a beta-blocker. This means that it blocks the receptor sites for Adrenaline, and it is commonly prescribed to control high blood pressure, (hypertension).

Adrenaline is often described as the; fight or flight neurotransmitter, that is to say that "fear," such as stage fright can cause the body to release large amounts of Adrenaline into the blood stream. Whilst this action is useful when trying to prepare for a fight, or flee a dangerous situation, it can become inhibitory when giving a presentation, or taking an exam etc.

By blocking this "fear spiral" of Adrenaline, Propranolol helps the individual to stay calm and in control of the situation.

To help lower blood pressure and remain calm, 20mg to 40mg can be taken approximately 1-hour before the "feared" event. The dose may be repeated later in the day if required, however we do not recommend more than 80mg daily unless under a physician's supervision.

Those who are diabetic, or have existing heart, kidney or liver disorders should consult with your physician first, before use.

Yeah, propanolol is used for the hypertension as you mentioned but it also acts for many other purposes. It is regularly given off for anxiety. This i say because i am a doctor too and cant see anybody laugh at a med's knowledge based on some googling that he may have done.

Any way if you want instant gratification propanolol is okay but if you want long lasting results, you ought to go in for alternative therapies especially yoga. I know that most meds are usually skeptical about complementary therapies but since i have tried them, i can assure you that they are not to be taken lightly in their utility. I am currently toying with the idea of setting up a hospital that combines both allopathy and alternative therapies ike yoga and homeopath and ayurveda. you can visit the Place where i learnt yoga - The International Yogalayam.
