I seriously would like to know how many of you knew that Depression can be cause by your diet? Somethings that we eat might trigger us to be depressed and having vitamins deficiency can cause a person to become depressed, anxious, moody, have bad body odor, become sensitivity to light and so on. I would really recommend people to watch what they eat, to exercise, to drink lots of water, and to do some research before getting on anti depressants medicine. I have noticed that a lot of people who use anti depressants medicine, either get worst or the dosage needs to get higher and higher and that tells me that if that doesn't work then there is something wrong. Why not find natural ways to cure depression, we know exercising and eating healthy can change the way a person feels. Seriously, i am not here to cause drama or anything or have people get upset at my post, i would just love for us to try something and change ourselves. If none of you believe me, doing research for yourselves wouldn't hurt anyone. Things in our diet such as sugar, sodium and other substances can trigger people's mood.

Of course is up to you to change, you decide if you want to live with your depression or change it.

Depression - hidden causes in the diet

Vitamin for Depression?

Cures for Diet Related Depression

I have a really horrible diet which i am trying to change although is very hard. I already started exercising and drinking lots of water. I am feeling better, i am now in COLLEGE and my last year of HS was horrible. I couldn't even get out to bed to go to school, i am thinking of buying a MULTIVITAMIN, VITAMIN D, ZINC, and OMEGA 3. I would seriously recommend people that if you do not believe me, please do some research it wouldn't hurt anybody. I know very well that a lot of psychiatrist and psychologist might even know this but exposing this would hurt their business.

I know it is and i don't know if this happens to anyone but when i used to run my knees used to hurt. So, i now use the elliptical drink plenty of water and i am seriously trying to change my diet completely. I don't eat no fruits whatsoever but that has to now changed. I am going to substitute any sugar that i use with honey and stuff like that. You have to start somewhere, and i really hope that more people see this thread and not ignore it.

I don't really believe that. I eat right. I spend all my free time at the gym. I don't drink soda or eat candy. Don't smoke or drink alcohol..and i take my vitamins every morning. I'm still depressed like hell. I've taken Zoloft as well as natural antidepressants like St. John Wort...nothing works. My brain is damaged I guess :(

I would say that I agree to an extent to what you are saying. I think there are a couple of layers to depression. I think there is the external layer that is pretty much our mood at the moment which I really think can be effected by drinking a lot of water, exercising everyday, taking fish oil and vitamins, and cutting down on soda and candy. But there is another layer that goes deeper and this one can be due to genetics and or past experiences and this one is much tougher to manage. I don't think watching our diet and exercising can effect this one as much and sometimes meds are needed because there is an imbalance in our brains. Trust me I do not like medicine and was pretty much at the end of the road so I had to start taking Wellbutrin but yeah I really don't like putting man made medicines which they really don't know whats going on with them into my body. For me I exercise atleast 4-5 times per week, don't always eat healthy but do not drink soda pop and eat candy, take a bunch of vitamins and fish oil, see a therapist and this really only helps on a day to day basis. The days I do feel good are far and in between but they are better than feeling down everyday. This whole thing sucks.

I've been trying vit d and it seems to not work for me. I live in a shit climate too.
But I don't think it's only diet, I think many disorders can be in some way connected to modern life.

There are people who have a deficiency of vitamins, this can be tested in the urine or blood. I am seeing a therapist though and i do feel better than what i used to. I know that when you are depressed you feel down all the time, trust me I KNOW but you need to want to change. I am probably one of the most negative person you would ever met but i am sick and tired of feeling depressed so i am trying to change my life the best way I can. I am only 17 years old and i refuse to be stuck in this cycle of depression for the rest of my life. I am tired of regretting everything, also there are many things hidden in our food that can cause depression and have different names. I am also trying to lose some weight for myself, for my health and for my self esteem. I definitely agree that a combination of our diet, and past experiences can make us depressed.

Though I don't think it's the direct cause of depression I'd say it's contributing to it, depending on the amounts of food digested, how frequent one eats, one's general condition, {physical} health, etc. I remember reading somewhere that eating healthy would give you more energy and make you feel better and in some cases decrease depression. But I don't think changing your diet alone can remove your depression totally.

Different things contribute to depression, and if you can remove or remedy any of those layers that contribute to depression, it helps. I agree that bad foods contribute to feeling like crap. I've experienced it myself, bad food makes me sick, feel like crap, feel hyper, tired, sleepy, etc. I think the no no foods are bread wheat gluten sugar processed foods junk food fried foods meat alcohol cigarettes drugs candy dairy, anything that "feeds the yeast." Instead, go for vegetables, water, some whole grains, some fruits, nuts, unprocessed foods in their natural state, etc.

But other things contribute to depression as well; just to name some: environment, family, upbringing, personal experiences, past experiences, career, job, money, life, exercise, health, relationships, how we handle problems, deal with problems, think, how we feel, etc..

Havocan, i am aware and i am in no way saying that is just going to make you depression free instantly. You must want to change, maybe even getting therapy, going outside and so on to change your mood. I was in a stage in life that i couldn't even wake up to go to school and now i am feeling much better because now my family understands how i feel and i have a therapist. Also, i am starting to be more social with other people. I think this... OUR DIET+personal problems...can cause depression. Oh and thanks for replying :).

LIL CHARLIE...yes exactly. Food can also contribute, and other personal problems. I know that when i eat let say french fries and fried chicken, i feel extremely tired. There are many things in our food with different names that are bad for us.

Depression is one of those disorders which most people face in there life as some stage for one reason or the other. If it's children the pressure of studies gets over their head and if it's adults the pressure of work attracts depression.
Xanax is one of those medicines which help in relieving anxiety and depression, but this medicine should only be used for small duration as this is habit forming drug and sometimes the withdrawal symptoms can be more depressing. The withdrawal from this medicine is a slow and gradual process rather than abrupt. Xanax works by slowing down the nervous system and hence relieves anxiety. The best way to get over anxiety and depression is to take a break from your regular schedule, go out, and take good sleep.
