Smelly Feet ( bromhidrosis )

Hi there,

My English is not very good, so please be patient w/me.
I have mild plantar hyperhidrosis, but in the last 2 months developed the nastiet case of bromhidrosis. Visited several dermatologists but nobody could cure this condition, their treatments weren't any good.

I learn that bacterias guilty of the foul odor are 'Staphylococcus epidermis' and 'Corynebacterium minutissimum', they use to live in our bodies but somehow it turned into a sepsis, invading some areas such as feet, axillas, etc. With this on mind, is legit to think: kill these bacterias - kill the odour - get back your life!
So here's my treatment:

ASK TO YOU DERMATOLOGIST TO PERFORM A BIOPSY IN ORDER TO ISOLATE THE BACTERIA GUILTY OF THIS CONDITION

1) Take Levofloxacin 500, one pill daily during 7 days ONLY IF YOUR DERMATOLOGIST AGREES, IT'S A VERY STRONG DRUG WITH MANY ADVERSE EFFECTS

2) Get Clorhexidina soap and take a shower twice a day, clean all your body w/this soap even in odor-less areas.

3) You will need Fusidic Acid cream to apply in your feet, which should be super-dry, pay special attention on your toes. Apply at least 3 times a day, changing your cotton socks everytime

4) Change towels and bed sheets, clean with lysol, bleach or any disinfectant, if possibly wash in 60ºC water. Also clean the bathroom floor and any surface your feet touched, same routine for your shoes and clothes. I know it looks too much, but is the only way to get rid of this odor.

In a couple of days the odor disappeared, but the Levofloxacin intake must go on 7 days, and a whole month for the Clorhexidina soap plus Fusidic Acid cream routine.
Be careful taking Levofloxacin, check the small print in order to find out any adverse effect that would be bad for your health.
Remember, in spite the odor leaves in two days, you must complete the whole treatment.

This forum helped me to cope with this horrible situation, so I'm very grateful to this community.
I hope this guide would help somebody.
Cheers!!! :)

OMG, i just want to thank you for your POST! i have had this problem for 14 years and no doctor has been able to help me get rid of the terrible smell. I have restricted my life to work and home because my job allows me to burn candles in my area in order to help. The smell is so bad you can smell me coming before i turn the corner. It's HUMILIATING to say the least. So, if this treatment can help me -- then my Prayers would have been answered! I have looked everything up online but the Fusic Acid Cream says its not approved for use in the US. Do you actually know how i can get a hold of the Fusic Acid Cream?? I've called my Dr's office to see if she will prescribe the pills. Thank you once again. I'll let you know how it all works out. But you are truly a blessing for positngs this treatment.

Fusidic Acid Cream is a formula prescribed for acne, at least in my country (Argentina) is approved, here you have more data including commercial names:

Fusidic acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm sure you won't have a problem with Clorhexidina soap since you don't need a prescription to buy it... so get it today and start feeling better!!. This is the soap used at local Hospitals to prevent nosocomial infection, so if you don't get it at the pharmacy try in one near a Clinic. And regarding Levofloxacin is a great thing you visit your doctor, maybe he/she would adjust a better dosis because for some medical condition such as kidney failure is a minor dosis.

Last two months I lived the worst nightmare of mi life, every day I smell was an eternal agony ... nobody can describe this rotten odor, you have to LIVE it to really get it.
Can't imagine how much your poor soul suffered last 14 years ... really hope this treatment can help you. And you have a job and a life, sweet jesus I couldn't show at work for over 1 month just because this pest. You are very brave, I really admire you and wish you the best.
;)

No adverse effects for me at all, but if you read Levofloxacin 500 leaflet fine print a list of serious adverse effects are mentioned.
This is a treatment you have to discuss with your dermatologist. Your doctor will consider all these warnings before prescription, if he/she thinks it would harm your health, you might ask to prescribe another medicine equally effective for Staphylococcus epidermis and Corynebacterium minutissimum (also if you can't find fusidic acid cream your doctor may give you another formula as good as fusidic acid).
When I started this treatment I was at home, took vacations from work, school and gym. Wasn't sure about the Levo pills but I was desperate to get rid of this odor, so I promised to myself that as soon as feel any bad symptom noted in the leaflet, I would quit. Finally completed seven days intake without problem.
Bromhidrosis was a nightmare and I needed to wake up immediately, visited several dermatologists and nodody could help. I considered ETS surgery so contacted a specialist who mentioned that the horrible odor might be caused by bacteremia. So I went back to dermatologist office and discussed the treatment, going back every week to follow the process (and to prescribe more fusidic acid, since it's a small 15gr tube ).

This was my experience, worked for me :)
I really hope this help you!!!!! please keep us updated with your progress

After almost a month, I finnaly got the laboratory biopsy!
The malodour was caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum and I was diagnosed with asymptomatic pitted keratolysis.
I shouldn't have ingested Levofloxacin because erytromicin is recommended, anyway fusidic acid was the saviour. According to my dermatologist, the cure of pitted keratolysis contist in oral erythromycin (250mg 4 times daily for 2 weeks) plus topical mupirocine (3 times daily over 1 month).

I have some callous areas which are getting better using urea 40%, in order to avoid reinfection, because these places are corynebacterium favorite spots. I also learn that corynebacterium is killed under 60 Celsius degrees water, so my cotton socks are boiled everyday. Yeah sounds ridiculous but I'm determined to never ever live this hell again.

Here's more info about corynebacterium, perhaps you can relate to these symptoms:

Corynebacterium-associated skin infections. [Int J Dermatol. 2008] - PubMed - NCBI

it's only the abstract but I obtained the full text at a medicine library, I have it in .pdf in case you want it I can send it via email.

Hi Brenda,

I hope you are well. The same for me after reading your story & following your advise. I don't have the right words to thank you because my life was on the verge of being destroyed. I believe God used you to rescue my life, God bless you abundantly.

I have just joined & hope to share my story with time. I lived with this disaster for 6 months & can relate to your story & use exactly the words you used, .............every day was eternal agony. But what's amazing is that after the 6 months, the smell disappeared one day after using the prescription. It's a miracle that will never be erased from my memory.

Again, God bless you richly & more so in 2015.

It's great when people can research an old post and be helped by someone who more than likely has left the group.

Welcome "healed"
I'm happy you have found help here.

Is Levofloxacin an anticholinergic medication? How exactly does it help stop your feet from sweating?

Thanks for responding to my quote, a little sad that Brenda left the group.
One day after 6 months of offensive smelly feet, my feet immediately stopped smelling & it's 4 months now. I took 1 Levofloxacin tablet at night & applied Fusidic acid on my feet & the next day I was smell free. Of course I continued the medication. It's only people who have been through this hell that can understand me.

It's been a long time!
I went fantastic over 1 year but it came back.
But fortunately I healed again :) With a twist:

Fusidic Acid Betametasona: twice a day on soles AND BETWEEN FINGERS. This is very important since bacteria also stays there.

Every night, apply Urea 10% (ureadin podos is fantastic)

Don't apply antiperspirants based on alcohol, this makes your skin atopic. I know dermatologists prescribe this but is poison.
Remember to wear only sandals during treatment (bacteria needs moist and warm environment to proliferate, so avoid closed shoes)
This time don't use Levofloxacin 500, fusidic acid can make the trick alone

IF THIS DONT WORK:
you can add cephadroxil, take 500 mg a day ater breakfast, under medical supervision.

IF IN YOUR COUNTRY CAN'T GET FUSIDIC ACID:
Replace it with mupirocine, not as good but 10000 times better than erithromicine or clindamicine or anything your dermatologist would prescribe.

Buena suerte amigos!! And God Bless you too,Healed :)

Hi Brenda, thank you for the information and not forgetting about this place once you got healed, especially since it's quite difficult to find info online regarding this topic.

My question would be, did you take something to battle the sweat and minimize the chances of reapparance during that year when you were cured? My biggest fear would be the bacteria coming back as soon as I stop the treatment. Also, did you wear closed shoes or only sandals? I'm really happy for you, either way, hopefully I can overcome this as well.

Hola!!
My preventive measures were wearing sandals even in winter, and use urea 10% every night.
But I think this is a chronic condition, we just must be very aware of the minimal change in odor and take immediate action.
So it came back, went to several dermatologists (skin doctors) whom prescribed aluminioum-alcohol antiperspirants and powders. It was poison to my skin, sadly I developed atopic skin which took a long time to heal (I think this is also a chronic condition, I just need to be careful with alcohol or irritants products now)

It was a vicious circle: the doctor's antiperspirant caused atopic skin, bacteria was reproducing more in the dead irritant skin, doctor prescribed even more antiperspirant, and more bacteria flourished with that odour from hell.

This second time around I used fusidic acid betametasona on soles and between fingers, the urea at nights, and also took Cefadroxil 500 mg for a period of 4 months. I think Ceadroxil was unnecessary but you know 'desperate times, desperate measures'.

Antibiotics have adeverse effects, it's a risk to use them for months. But I made a choice, a very personal one. I confess sometimes I cherished the idea of killing myself, so I though I'd rather die poisoned by antibiotics trying to find my cure, than living this pestilent hell one more day.

If you have the chance to find an open minded dermatologist, you can explain your concerns so s/he can prescribe the antibiotics and follow your case. Wish you the best!!!

Hello Brenda ,
My question to you is ,have you tried Iontophoresis to get your feet instead of all the medicaments ? Ionto got my feet dry ...no sweat, no smell ,! I bought a into machine that has both direct and pulsed current from Bindner medical in Germany , its easy to use and the therapy is painless and has no side effects.

Keep in mind that "backfish" is only on this site to promote an expensive ionto device sold by Marcus Binder

My hunch is that he is Marcus.

Unfortunately, his advice has little merit and offers little to this forum other than offering an extremely expense device that has no more benefit than a less expensive off brand device. Ionto is ionto, which is direct current.

**** BEWARE ****

Thanks for your advice. I tried ionto and botox but didn't work because it doesn't function on apocrine sweat gland (oily ODOR generators glands) but only in eccrine gland (waterish sweat glands) ETS won't work either on appocrine glands but yes on eccrine sweat gland.
