Smiling.

Today at work I realized one of my biggest problems is not being able to smile in a public place. Its hard to make me laugh or smile anyway but once in a while I have to crack a smile to be polite and it feels so awkward, I concentrate on my facial expression and it sucks haha. one way I can smile is if I only do a half smile, then it doesn't feel awkward. Now that I think about it I'm the same way with laughing out loud, I just can't do it, I concentrate on how I sound when I laugh, so when I laugh i laugh silently. Anyone else have this problem? It sucks because I often come off as being like an ass.

haha! you're not alone (well, not on this topic anyway!).

i used to get hung up on this issue, now i'm somehow (by the grace of god!) able to deal with it better than before. but seriously, people at work used to ask me what was wrong all the time... of course i wanted to say "I'm just a little tense here, okay?!" but i'd ironically end up smiling and just ask, "What are you talking about?".

taking yourself too seriously can really hurt you in the long run, i guess. now i just casually smile to all the good people around me, and simply ignore the dicks. somehow it's working, but who knows for how long!

People always tell me I look so terrified all of the time, just looking very afraid and shocked. I don't know how because that dosen't seem like a regular facial expression so I feek really awkward about it all. This makes me nervous and when I try to do other expressions I feel like everyone is staring at me. I'll give you back a smile if you smile at me, but I don't think I smile the right way. Bleh.

Interesting topic.

I also have trouble smiling in public. My biggest concern is that someone will respond to my smile with a smile/approach of their own, which could lead to *gasp* socializing. What a horrifying prospect that is, eh?

I actually smile TOO much. Im overly friendly. And its so dumb cause I dont want to be friendly. I dont want to look approachable (sp?). I want people to leave me alone. But for some reason I just feel like I HAVE to smile and act like im having the time of my life.

Maybe I just dont like people asking me whats wrong. When you smile and pretend to be happy, people dont usually ask whats wrong with you, lol. My nervous reaction is to be cute and bubbly.... lame lame lame lame lame

Thats not lame, I like girls like that. Girls who don't smile aren't very attractive. But i guess you have to talk to a girl to get her to smile don't you haha.

I hate it when people ask me whats wrong to. There is a girl at my work and she always asks me stuff like "why are you so grouchy all the time" and "whats wrong" and "why are you so quite". She also tells me to smile every time she sees me. I guess its actually helping me in a way though, because she forces me to talk(even if its only a few words) and smile.

I smile far too much, so totally the opposite to you. I smile when somebody takes the piss out of me for god's sake

My advice to you would just be to remember that people want you to smile when they talk to you, because it's a way of them gauging how you feel about what they're saying, or what you're feeling. It'll make you seem more approachable. (which perhaps isn't what you want at all anyway!)
So yeah, just remember that people will want you to smile so don't feel bad or conscious about doing it :)

heh when i was a kid i used to laugh so much when i got told off and when i got compliments too......i dunno why maybe it was just the attention on me, didn't know how to deal with it or something.

Anyways i usually just smile to peeps if they smile at me....kinda forced i guess. Erm yeah i found out that my normal facial expression is frowning, which sucks really, i must look like a right grumpy bast.

If people see me in public, they always tell me to smile. I especially hate the strange creepy men who tell me to smile (standing in line, shopping, etc) Crap, one time I was at a stoplight in my car, and this creep next to me rolls down his window and tells me I should smile. Talk about a lame pick-up tactic.

Or I get people I know who see me in public and they always say something lame to the effect "hey I saw you driving your car and you weren't smiling"

Really, do normal people smile 24/7 in their cars while they are driving or standing in line at the grocery store? Why am I always being called out on it? I must look pissed or something.

I totally understand the not-smiling thing.
