So now we all have to worry about this...

Dark Days Here for Folks With Seasonal Depression

Seasonal Affective Disorder

this is kinda standard stuff for social phobics... but i'm wondering if the people doing this study already know about general social anxiety disorder sufferers (the same acronym incidentally,) or if they're categorizing this separately and not cross-associating the two. because the "darker days" definitely affect us normal social phobics...

idk, seems like a pointless disorder category, what do you all think?

I think "dark days" is just a play on words, or a double entendre, or whatever it's called, haha.

Seasonal affective disorder is uncommon in Australia, but people do have it and I can understand it's a legitimate thing, especially in countries that have brutal, dreary winters.

Try to stay positive, guys!

I think Seasonal Affective Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder are two unrelated things, though I agree that many people will have both, I don't think that having one means you get the other

Seasonal affective disorder is uncommon in Australia

More common the further south you go, I suspect

I don't think my mother could be said to have social anxiety or depression, but she does become miserable during the winter months. She even becomes depressed in the fall when she might get up to work before the sun rises and get home after it sets, with no time to see the sun. I think there's definitely something to the idea of some people being seriously affected by changes in natural light, with winter being the time it's hardest to get any sun.

I've sometimes wondered if my mother has some kind of anxiety issue, but I know it's not social anxiety.

I do think I get a little bummed out when Summer's starting to end and the days grow shorter, but that mostly comes from having had bad experiences mostly during the colder seasons. It's also pretty much a thing of the mind. You can learn how to appreciate sunny days but also the smell and the sound of the rain, or how a nice warm coat/jacket feels when it's cold outside, or how great it feels to get under your blankets to sleep when it's cold.

right, and for some like myself, I have less anxiety during the colder/darker seasons because less people are out and about, which means fewer catalysts for social anxiety :applause: ...

also it's cooler and nicer. i'm hate hot weather... (I might be a vampire )

I totally agree. I don't operate as well in the summer.

I enjoy winter too. I won't go for a walk unless it's at least dusk, so the dark provides me some "cover" (yep, I'm Nosferatu too!) I hate it when people look at me.

For those of you with seasonal depression, I had it really bad for several years but then was prescribed large doses of vitamin D and it went away. I no longer fear the winter, it's nice.

Sometimes I think my worrying comes from trauma. Not from physical trauma or anything like that. I mean like when I heard a rumor that scared me so bad I couldn't sleep for 4 years and now every December I get anxious. So I don't know if that is trauma but it feel's like it is triggered.
