sweaturated

My name is Ryan and I've had hyperhidrosis for as long as I can remember. with my hands, I can remember smudging ink across my test papers and handing them in and getting heck from the teacher for messy work. I had been suspended in sixth grade for fighting, had to sit in the principals office when I came back, was so nervous I literally formed a pool of sweat cupped in my hands...he wanted to shake my hand after our chat and I couldn't, I was very embarassed. My feet were also affected, my shoes always smelled so bad and I got teased by the kids for this, there is no understanding at this age.

When ****rty came, things only got worse. My armpits became severely affected, always with pit stains especially in summer, and not just small, like to put in perspective diameter of a grapefruit in each pit....I remember bunching the material of my shirt in my pits to try and hide it. And all this was always without any exhertion, I would constantly have overactive sweat glands.

My story is no different as many of you may have heard, tried many different antiperspirants (no matter how high the aluminum chloride %), wrapping my areas that sweat in saran wrap overnight soaked in some perscription anti-perspirant, robinul pills, iontophoresis, you name it....then I looked into ETS.

I had ETS when I was 18, it was a no brainer, this seemed like the best option. unfortunately I had the side effect of compensatory sweating. My hand were great! But the left side of my face and the right side of my chest were unbearably sweaty, also the right side of my back....as bad as my hands were. And my feet still were bad. oh, and left armpit, not the right. I lived with this another 7 years and then found another Dr. online who said he could help me find relief with a second ETS procedure. Problem was he was in Brazil and my Canadian health care wouldn't cover the costs. I was desperate and open a credit line and covered the cost (with some help from my parents) and flew out to Brazil. All together cost approx $11 000. I'm not rich by any means, blue collar status, that was a large financial hit.

The second ETS surgery left my lower half vulnerable to compensatory sweating. With minimal exhertion I get quite saturated especially in the summer or when being intimate. Again leaving me very uncomfortable in social situations.

Through all this I did manage to put myself through school and become a paramedic, and had a son. I've dealt with very low times through the years, but I have to go on, for my boy. He is 4 years old and I am noticing he is suffering from sweaty hands :( I have to teach him not to let this condition run his life like I let it run mine and not get the best of him.

I hope anyone can find solace in my story.

Thanks for sharing your story. The moral is we carry on. Hopefully your little one will learn from you how to talk about his sweaty hands and will grow up not feeling burdened.

Do you regret having ETS?

Hi drippy19, thanks for sharing your experience. I remember looking into getting ETS and actually called the place to set it up but they told me I had to try all the other treatment options available first so I never did it. I've learned to manage it somewhat, but it still has a huge effect on pretty much everything especially work and social situations.
