Hi Danfalc. I appreciate that u have to make a judgment call on these threads and decide when to close them and when to leave them & that can be very difficult. But, i think u often close a thread just when people are getting to the crux of an issue. Honestly, I think u made a mistake in closing the thread about Psychiatry and medicine. Certainly this is a topic that many of us on here are going to have strong views on! However, strong viewpoints do NOT mean the thread should be shut down! I think Jo1991, Nova & everyone else on that thread had valid points. Sure, there was some swearing & that should be edited, however, the tread should not have been locked. U can't lock every thread that raises different points of view! It was by no means out of hand & I feel u acted too quickly in locking it.
That being said, I think there were some valid points made. My mom is in the social work business & she's seen many people do well on medication. People that couldn't survive w/out their prescribed medication. I've struggled w/taking meds though. My mom has thought that I should but I've fought it for a number of yrs. Why? Because we don't want to think there's something wrong w/our brains.
My philosophy is this. YES! The drug industry is a HUGE industry! There's money to be made in prescription drugs! However, if they Actually help u, what's the problem w/taking them? Is it an industry? Absolutely! What isn't these days? That's why u have to do ur homework and make sure ur doing what's right for you. If taking some prescribed med. will make things easier for you & make u more able to enjoy life, do it! Who gives a flying flammy what ur therapists motives are for prescribing it. If it helps, take it!
But be a responsible consumer. Do ur homework. Get a second opinion. Try different things. If drugs aren't ur way to go, try alternative therapy. Behavioral therapy, message therapy, relaxation techniques, whatever. YOU are the consumer. It's no different than buying a car, leasing an apartment, getting a dog, adopting a cat. Make a responsible choice & be in charge of ur life. Yeah, it's not simple. It takes work. And only u can do the work.
