Welcome to N.H.K. (anime)

Have anybody seen it? It is about hikikomori (a japanese term similar to social anxiety). The anime offers some useful ideas about the problem (although not all of them can be easily realised in real life). What do you thing about the anime? :)

Never heard of it... I'll have to check it out I guess if its not boring or anything.

I do love animes for the most part. Overly stylized, imaginative, and better than average storytelling for the most part (well.. I've only seen a handful but I thought all were pretty awesome...)

I love anime. Even boring anime, like haibane Renmei. (actually, the less rubber cat suits, super natural ninja powers, and one geeky dude living with 15 mindless tarts, the better.)

I'll check it out on veoh.

You know what was a good anime? Ergo Proxy. Has NOTHING to do with SA, but still worth watching.

I've seen about four or five episodes of that anime. Its pretty good but I couldnt get too into it even though I tried. I guess it doesnt entertain me as much as I thought it would. Even though its an anime, it hits pretty close to home. Lol, when I chill out, I'd usually rather watch something totally unrelated to me or something very happy. :?

Hey, thanks for the suggestion! I'm up to episode 10 and Im liking it alot! I dont think it could exactly 'help' anyone, but it's really funny! (and diiiirty, sheesh. men!) Like the part where yamazaki lends tatsuhiro his hentai collection, and he sits up all night jacking his shit. (AAAHAHAHAHA!) And the other part when tatsuhiro is convinced he's turned into a pervert and makes yamazaki wait in the bushes outside of a high school with him to take pictures of girls, and that weird girl busts him. That cracked me up.

My house looks EXACTLY like tatsuhiro's appartment. I think the writer knows a thing or two about the issue.

I've seen it and liked it a lot too, Krellian. At first I thought the show was making fun of people with SAD but eventually realized that it was empathetic towards people like us. It has everything it needs to qualify as a great anime, in my eyes: a meaningful storyline, good animation, likable characters, a sense of humor, great music, and a good ending. I've heard that the manga is better than the anime, although I haven't read it yet. But as noblame mentioned, Welcome to the NHK is a bit 'diiiirty' (no explicit nudity though) so you might want to look elsewhere if you're sensitive to that stuff.

I'm curious- does anybody know of other anime/shows/(anything with a storyline) that relate to social phobia?

I've heard of it. Sound a little creepy though. Maybe I'll watch it when I'm older.

All I can think of is Neon Geneisis Evngelion, I'm sure there must be others.

I just recently watched all the Evangelion shows. Best anime, no, best show period that deals with anxiety.

Ya Evangelion is good. That was actually the first anime series I ever watched. I didn't even know what SA was at the time but I could really relate to a few of the characters and thats really what made me fall in love with it. I think most here would be able to relate to some degree.

Not really having to do with anxiety really but Air was also something I could somewhat strangely relate too. Mostly cause of the stuff about never being able to have any friends and feeling like you wanna just fall asleep and never wake up. But the girl isn't really social phobic exactly but anyway... it's still one of my favorites. It's also probably the saddest anime series I think I've seen.

I'll be watching welcome to NHK tonight (I have the first episode on my to-watch-list before getting more of the series)

watched Neon Genesis Evangelion, which deals with anxiety and avoidant personality disorder and several other depressive mental health issues,

School Days I watched the first episode of last week, and that impressed me because it showed how a girl can really help a shy guy to socialize with girls in general.

not in anime form yet, the mangas Pastel and Chisa X Pon are both about guys with shyness issues around girls.

To-LOVE-Ru is a hillarious manga (also an anime) which starts off with a guy who is infatuated with a female classmate, and then a very enthusiastic and adorable alien princess falls in love with him... my favourite series for the last 2 years.

Ichigo 100% manga and anime are also worth a look...

It's one of my favorite things ever.

I've just never related to something in fiction more than I have with Welcome to the NHK. Much like the protagonist, I had spent the past year cooped up alone in my room without a job. Seeing all of my exact emotions in that show was an experience. Some of it was hard to watch, because it's so raw and personal to me. I don't think I'd ever show it to someone I knew in person because it'd be the equivalent of completely opening up and letting my deepest thoughts and emotions out. It's not just a huge downer, it's funny and lighthearted at times. Overall, it comes across as very bittersweet.

I recommend it to anyone that comes to this forum, regardless of if you like anime or not. The feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness are expressed in it better than anything else I've encountered in fiction.

The guy who wrote the novel (which they based the anime and manga on) was a hikikimori himself so it all comes across as very legitimate in its portrayal. The sad thing is that once he got successful on this, he basically lives on the royalty checks and has regressed back into his old ways. Then again, I myself and still stuck without a job and I don't know what it will take for me to get one. I wish I could have a Misaki of my own, but that's just a stupid fantasy.

watched the first episode, thought the girl was especially cute...

I can certainly relate to the hikikomori guy, but have never been that agoraphobic myself

Yes, Satou's extreme agoraphobia was a bit out there, but it does happen.
That girl he liked (Senpai was her name?), her little attitude just hits soo close to home.
I can relate to it being so close to home that you don't wanna watch.
That's the whole reason I don't watch 'everybody loves raymond'

NHK is one of my favourite animes ever, I rated it 10/10. I loved the whole atmosphere and how it made me forget about the real world. I also liked it since I've never had a gf and I'm still waiting for my own Misaki :)

yeah, same here... for a girl that cute to take me by the hand and pull me out of my depression and loneliness, I would do just about anything for her...
