We're awfully chatty for the Socially Phobic

I'm slightly amused by how much all of us in this community are actually very talkative. I'm a member of a few other forums, but this one makes the others look dead. When I click on a recent topic and find that there are 43 pages of responses to it... that seems pretty amazing.

My guess is that this is partially because many of us are starved for human interaction, and for many more of us find it easier to talk to people who can relate to us... the impersonal nature of electronic communication also gives a feeling of security.

I can leave this forum whenever I want, or come back when I feel like it. I'm not obligated or put on the spot to reply to anyone else on the forum. I can just make my post and pretend that maybe it means something to someone else here. I also like reading other people's posts, even though most of the time I don't say a word. Seeing that there are other people who go through a lot of the same things I think and feel helps me to feel better.

If anyone would like to comment, just to let me know you're reading, maybe share some way that you relate or why all of you seem to like posting so much... I guess that's what this (my first thread) is about. :)

He he, I can relate to what you wrote... I was actually pretty surprised too..
I think you're mostly right...

Also, it seems this forum could use some more 'guidelines' for newbies and such.. Like more 'stickied' posts that are of relevance for many people.. Because some threads can get really similar..
I sometimes think people post so much because they don't read the other threads, where they could learn exactly the same things.. Some old threads were really helpful and eye-opening for me to read...

Also know some threads are years old! :)

hey.. hi there. Yup.. this is one of the most active forums around.. In my experience of the various forums I've been too, Insomnia forums are the least active.. I guess those guys and gals with insomnia are just too drained to chat too much. I'm one of them, but my work is online, so that helps a lot since I don't have to answer to a 'boss'

I am most definitely staved of human interaction. If it would possible to get me 100% comfortable and confident you probably could never get me to stop talking.

This forum is really awesome, I'm not a very reliable source seeing as it's my first one. All nice people, all can make you laugh, all in the same boat as you.

It's quite ironic, isn't it? ;J This forum is definitely better then others of similar- and other orientation. The most significant problems with most forums I've been on is that either A: The mods are like a squad of Hitlers, making it almost impossible to truly express yourself. Or B: The users care either very little, or not at all. Resulting in rushed and badly worded posts that aren't helpful nor nice.

But here, the mods are awesome, and so are the majority of the SPW users. Even the people whom claim to ''not care about anything'' care at least a little bit for their fellow sufferers. :3

It's sad in a way, though, when it takes this much pain and suffering to make people as nice and supportive as they are one here. Hm. :/

Well.. one thing I'd also like to commend on this forum is its atmosphere. Even when posters don't agree with one another, there's little outright insults and certainly less vulgarities than many other forums I've been too. Newcomers are also usually made to feel welcome. It's a collective effort I guess..

6 replies already? Wow, point made, lol.

Black Puma: I agree very strongly with your comment about how wrong it is that it usually takes a lot of suffering to create an understanding person. I am very thankful for the people whom I have had the privilege of talking to here. There are a lot of people who care about each other, in spite of what my paranoid thoughts tell me. We're all very different people, from all walks of life, but social phobias are what brings us together.

That's one of the most ironic, and also the nicest things about SPW.

It seems that most everyone who is here is willing to give respect to others in exchange for a little respect in return. It's pretty sad for society that so many kind, understanding and respectful people are often being overlooked. It's also very sad that the overlooking is often, at least in my case, my own fault for being too scared to take an initiative.

I agree. And that's also how it should be, in my opinion. It's like an actual (very) small village community, everyone plays his/her part, and most of the time it works. The only thing it takes is a certain perspective, patients and the ability to bite ones tongue a little sometimes.

That's because the people on here are great. If they were all judging bast*ards like other forums I'm on, I wouldn't comment this much. A forum I joined years ago I only got like ~150 posts. I don't feel really welcome over there. Here I feel great. :)

funny you should say this cause i've been thinking i write posts and can't seem to give simple answers. i put in all this redundant info and it drives me crazy. i'm impressed that some people can keep it to one or two lines. short and sweet. it may have to do with add or something, idk.

anyway, i def agree with your reasons for us being chatty.

I was afraid that the responses to my posts would tend to be agressive but so far I'm happy

That's because an overwhelming majority of dudes are jerks. I visit several car, sports, and programming forums, and people just absolutely sh** on each other there. I think dudes just love arguing for the sake of arguing, and good luck posting a question without getting at least a few condescending answers.

It's shocking/hilarious how rude people can be without any provocation, especially on the programming boards. The majority of computer programmers and math nerds are serious a**holes (reinforced by how they are in real life, too).

And the more socially-oriented boards are populated by immature, superficial nutjobs (with exaggerated Napoleon complexes IMHO). For example, you could post a pic of a woman whom I'm sure most genuine people would consider gorgeous, and they'll just slam her with stupid or flat-out nasty comments. It's no wonder so many peeps have image problems.

Couldn't explain it better. Still, a note with the programmers/nerds 'stereotype': If they are, they do think they are better then some one else. But I don't think most of them are a**holes, I think they're just frustrated, lol.::p:

Yes, you struck gold! This is at least my reason anyway, this is the only form of talking I do!

Some of us online can be quite chatty, but in person, that's another story. My anxiety online and in person is like night and day. But that's just me personally.

Probably because you're a lot more used to talk online than in person... I'm not used to that online nor in person and it gives me the same awkward feeling (it's just way worst in person because I can't hide anywhere)
