How do you deal with suicidal thoughts?

Sorry but i dont agree with that Distraction Plan at all, You need to find the root problem and remove it forever.

Distraction plan is used for immediate problems. I cant remove my problems, I have a life sentence of physical pain(DA) and depression(dsythymia). For those who have just clinical depression, you cant suddenly get over depression over night either.

To the original poster, suicide happens when your pain exceeds your ability to cope. Get help and learn new and better ways to cope with your pain. Talking about it helps me.

I find that religion is good for preventing actual suicide attempts. My religion of Christianity has many people that believe suicide is a sin and will get you into hell.

This has been my main reason for never attempting it. The way I see it, a few more years of pain is better than an eternity of torture in hell. This of course only works if you have hardcore religious beliefs.

As for ridding suicidal thoughts, I dont really have much advice on that issue as I struggle with it too. I try the therapy and medications but none have really helped so far. Exercise helps a person to feel better and this would be recommend but when your having suicidal thoughts the last thing you want to do is exercise.

-Plan a trip to somewhere youve been wanting to go
-or do (or plan to do) something that youve always wanted to do.
- Buy yourself something.
A few months ago when I was really depressed I started to plan a trip. I was going to take a few weeks off of school and work. I bought myself camping supplies and some other stuff to prepare for the trip. I ended up not going but from just preparing and being able to look forward to not going to (and not having to stress out about) work and school I felt better (anyways, it probably wouldnt have been best to go on a 1 man roadtrip with no destination when I was extremly depressed)

-think about you're family and/or friends and the pain you'd cause them.
-think about God. And how you'd waste the life that God has given you.
(Those two reasons above are the reasons that I dont think of suicide as being a option as much as before.)

If any of this advice doesn't work and you are really set on killing your self:
-Instead of killing yourself, give yourself one more shot to make yourself better in anyway. Example: try harder at school and/or work , work out, get a tan :D , learn something new, etc... Accomplish something/anything positive and whatever satisfaction you get might make you feel better.

or try volunteering somewhere where you can help other people. Helping people usually makes me feel better and you wouldnt be wasting your life.

i dont know, just some ideas......

Yep. I am the exact same way, although I'm not really "hardcore" in my religious beliefs. I wasn't really indoctrinated with any sort of religion as a child, but I went to a Catholic high school. It helped, but that only really works if you hold that idea of "going to hell after killing yourself" to be a central belief in your life philosophy.

Aside from that, if things get particularly bad, I think about who it is going to affect, and how people around me react to other suicides. I went through two seperate co-worker suicides at my two most recent jobs, and I saw the profound effect that it had on both groups of people. I never want to make anyone feel bad about me, so that helps me to break the funk I'm in and try to think more positively.
