Movies with Social Anxiety

I just saw the movie Bubble, which was really good. One of the main characters has social anxiety and talks about it a little bit and in the special features the actor talks about his real life sa. I thought it was really interesting to see that talked about and it sounded so familiar. I highly recommend this to any of you.

Has anyone seen this or other movies with social anxiety as a topic?

Wow....I gotta see that. No - I haven't seen movies with this a topic. I am glad you posted about it. Thank you.

To a certain degree, Coyote Ugly deals with if not social phobia, then certainly with shyness.

The main character struggles to overcome her nerves and realise her own musical potential.

Dead Poets Society deals with Social Anxiety a bit. One of the main characters seems to suffer from it. He's terrified of speaking in class or even joining groups for school papers and stuff. Plus, the movie is absolutely outstanding.

The anime series "Neon Genesis Evangelion", it would appear the main character suffers from SA or GAD.

I agree about Dead Poets Society, that is a great movie. I'll have to check out the other ones...

Also, don't know if anyone is interested but i just noticed that they have the interview with the actor from Bubble on their website: http://www.bubblethefilm.com/media/. He's Kyle under "interviews with the cast" and he has a really interesting story about how he's dealt with his social anxiety.

I see your avatar is Amelie! :3

That's one of my very favorite movies, and I could really relate to Amelie's extreme shyness. I think it could definitely be considered a social anxiety movie.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Cool i'll check it out iv been meaning to check out that series for a few years.

Theres an arthouse flick directed by Vincent Gallow, starring him and Christina Ricci, called Buffallo 66.

Its about him getting out of jail and kidnapping her. He is one messed up guy. When i first saw this film, it was during the peak of my social anxiety, and i remember how closely i related to this guy it was almost eerie.

True! Even though I didn't really like Shinji (I actually didn't find any of the characters very likeable), I saw a lot of my own not-so-great traits in him, amplified. Self doubt and avoidance of people and responsibility. It was very interesting watching it in that light.

Plus it's just an awesome series.

Sure, he was a whiner, but that's what made him such a great character. The main obstacle was himself, the series teaches you a lot about responsibility .

Well it doesn't actually mention SA in these movies but I think "May", "Carrie" & "Willard" all have SA.

Those are great, (definitely watch 'May') and ill add:

"40 year old virgin" (the leading char is not exactly social phobic maybe, but very shy and definitely someone that people lable as "loser", beware :p it may look like comedy movie but its more touchy than funny)

"The Baxter" (Another beautiful "loser" movie)

"Ghost World" (Amazing movie, one of the main characters have extreme shyness)

"Edward Scissorhands" (About being the odd one out)

"A Beautiful Mind" (Lol, i saw this at the theatre and alone, i almost had a panic attack at the scene where he talks to himself in the university campus and everyone stares at him, i remember thinking id end up the same way 8O )

"WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE" (I left the best for last and im surprised noone mentioned this, the main char is a 11(? not sure) year old girl, who has no friends and gets bullied at school, very touchy and funny at times, one of my all time favourites)

SA or GAD are completely inadequate in describing Shinji. If it's even possible to sum him up in DSMIV lingo, the closest I can come would be:
Bipolar Disorder II, Paranoid Schizophrenia NOS, Borderline Personality Disorder, Dissociative Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder with Psychotic dellusions, and maybe Multiple Personality Disorder, but I don't know about MPD because he never has any lines when he goes nutso.

The official diagnosis is separation anxiety disorder, as stated by the creator of the series, so you didn't accurately describe him well either.

Has anyone watched Nanni Morettis Caro Diario (Dear Diary)

Main characther (acting himself i suppose) doesnt have SA at all, but he is all preocupied with over thinkin and over curiosity, and he is definetely seen weird in others eyes(he doesnt give a damn about it) . Reminds me of me a lot . Great tune of Keith Jarret in one scene , also Khaled , Angelique Kidjo. Watch it at least for music.
