Not really a rant or a vent. These are just things that happen to me all the time. I'm just wondering if some of you experience the same. Do you sometimes feel as if you are invisible or that you might as well be? Add your examples if you do.
Standing in line at the store. I was the only one there. So where’s the cashier? She’s standing off to the side talking to a co-worker. I’m in clear view of her. I wait about a minute more and now I’m about to say something. Just then another customer gets in line behind me. Suddenly, it becomes imperative that customers not have to wait! The cashier immediately hustles to the cash register to take care of her customers right away. Why wasn’t it urgent when it was just me standing there??
I have a good idea at work or with my family and make a suggestion. The suggestion is duly noted but mostly ignored. Weeks later, after much anguish and deliberation, somebody else makes the same suggestion and it is heralded as not just a good idea but a pure stroke of genius! WTH?? Why wasn’t it a pure stroke of genius when I suggested it weeks ago?!? Enough credit simply can’t be given to this person as his unbelievable idea is brought up again and again. My attempts to point out I had the same idea weeks earlier is only seen as a way to either pat myself on the back or steal credit from the rightful person.
I ask a related question during a conversation. The conversation continues just like I never asked a question. I ask the question again. Conversation continues. I ask the question LOUDER a third time. Conversation stops, answer is finally given but in a way that says I was completely out of line for asking a question so rudely and in the middle of a conversation to boot. Conversation quickly resumes, me and my question are quickly forgotten.
I’m driving. Here comes somebody who has decided they want to get into the lane I’m driving in. No hesitation, no turn signal, just whoosh, comes right on over. If not for my ability to avoid them they would have smashed into me and/or run me off the road. Do I have a car that’s easily missed? No! My car is red and should be seen with no problem. I could dismiss this as just being in their blind spot but it happens one or two more times before I get to my destination. WTH?!?
I’m walking along minding my own business. Here comes somebody going in the same direction who has decided to walk right into my path. Huh?!? Am I walking too quietly? Why didn’t they see I was right there beside them? Unlike with my car, a collision won’t cause any damage so there have been times when I’ve kept right on going and let them bump into me. Their reaction? Pure surprise as if I just appeared out of thin air. Sometimes they react with annoyance as in, how dare he not get out of my way as I walked into his path!
In class or in a meeting at work, handouts are being passed around. Either I don’t get mine at all or I get shorted some of the pages. I have to ask for my handouts. They are given to me without problem but it seems I always have to ask for mine while everybody else gets theirs automatically.
Maybe I actually died a few years ago and just don't realize I'm a ghost like Bruce Willis in 6th Sense. The upside is I haven’t gotten a speeding ticket in over ten years. I suppose it’s useful being invisible sometimes. LOL!
